Emerging from Halifax, Nova Scotia, rock and Americana outfit Newbridge unveil their powerful new single, “Centuries.” A sweeping, emotional journey, the track encapsulates the chaos and excitement of rediscovering love after years of guarded hesitation. With elements of rock, R&B, and folk woven together, “Centuries” captures both the darkness and exhilaration that comes with stepping into something unknown. The song comes from their debut album, Past Lives, which is set for official release on March 28th.
Originally inspired by classic ’60s R&B, the song evolved to embrace a more dramatic, cinematic feel, drawing comparisons to The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” and Pink Floyd’s “The Great Gig in the Sky.” The tension between its hopeful lyrics and the brooding instrumental backdrop is heightened through the use of borrowed chords and an evocative vocal performance by Amber Woodhouse, pushing the song into bold new sonic territory.
What can you share with readers about your new project?
This new song explores the fear of relationships, shaped by a history of difficult love interests. It’s set against a psychedelic 60s R&B vibe, providing a rich, layered experience for the listener to really dive into.
How does this release compare with your other projects in the past?
This song represents a departure from previous work, yet it still carries the signature sound of Newbridge. It’s fresh, but recognizable to long-time listeners.
What about this single makes you most proud?
We wanted to create an explosive wall of sound for the intros and outros, while keeping the verses and middle 8 tight and minimalist, telling a clear narrative. We’re really happy with how we pulled that off.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
The goal was the same as above: to strike the perfect balance between chaos and simplicity, and I think we achieved it.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
Songwriting haunts me. A melody, rhythm, or idea will lodge in my brain, and I can’t let it go until I create something from it. There’s nothing else like that feeling in my life—it’s a strange, compulsive drive I don’t experience anywhere else.
If you could collaborate with anyone—dead or alive, famous or unknown—who would it be and why?
I’d love to collaborate with Mark Knopfler. Not only is he an incredible guitarist, but his songwriting is exceptional. He seamlessly blends American, Celtic, and British folk music, and his production is top-notch.
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Neil Young is probably my number 1. I listen to a lot of his music—just recently, I played From Hank to Hendrix.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
