Neverkept is an American rock quintet based out of South Jersey, previously known as Count To Four. Drawing influence from a plethora of different rock subgenres, the band merges pop style vocal elements with the instrumentation of an alternative and sometimes progressive rock band. The band compliments their dynamic guitar tones with clean delays and a hint of programming. With each song having a slightly different flavor, there’s something for everyone’s musical taste buds.
The name Neverkept comes directly from the personal convictions of the band’s members. Alongside the music itself, the name touches on the notion of realizing lost hope and acknowledging that possibility of “what if”. It symbolizes striving for one’s goals, for which the lifestyle of a touring band serves as a prime example. Neverkept’s message is the difference between losing sight and finding it.
The band has been known to be one of the hardest working unsigned bands in the underground DIY scene, and after doing many stints across all of North America, they teamed up with producer Taylor Larson on a fan-funded album to propel their sound and limits as a band into a new spectrum. Be on the look-out for what’s to come from this group, as they promise to deliver.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with the band about challenges, motivations, the latest project and more.
Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We are from New Jersey, the bottom half, right outside of Philadelphia. We make a really fun blend of pop, modern alternative, and punk rock. It has been an absolute blast coming together in the writing process because between the five of us we have a lot of different influences so it is interesting to see everything come together. We try to create music that people want to share – the kind that really hits home to kids both lyrically and musically. We want what we do to be authentic before anything else.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
We’re just a bunch of guys who love music, and the experiences that come out of doing it – wouldn’t want to the doing anything else.
I think ultimately it’s just flat out fun. On top of all of that, however, you really do get to experience things that nobody else really can. I really can’t stress enough how much I implore any young band or musician in general to pack their stuff up with their friends and hit the road. You will learn so much about yourself and meet people that will make an impact on you for years to come.
My biggest motivator has to be my brothers in this band. They inspire me to work hard and stay focused because i see how focused they are as well. Also, food. The food you see on the road, don’t even get me started. Really big fan of regional delicacies. Actually, let me change that answer to “regional delicacies” … anyway, moving on.
How is “Vertigo” different than previous releases? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
Musically it’s similar to what we’ve done in the past in other bands, but far more mature both instrumentally and programing wise. We also attempted to put together a great story line for our music video to accompany that maturity from our past projects.
Vertigo is the first release from Neverkept, that’s why it’s such a big deal for us to get it out there and we are ecstatic from the overall positive response it has gotten so far. We wanted to write a record and have a sound that would be universal. I know that is a really tall order but we really pushed ourselves to get as close to that as we possibly could. We wanted to create a sound that could tour with anyone, we want to tour with everyone. I genuinely think we have something for everyone. We put a lot of hard work into it.
Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?
The two big challenges you face on a daily basis are relativity and saturation. The digital age is a double edged sword, it is hands down the most useful tool for getting yourself out there, and great for people to discover new music, but you can also get lost in the crowd if you don’t stand out. Having a colorful social media presence is invaluable nowadays. However, at the same time, there is a ton of competition. Everyone has the same advantages as you, so how do you set yourself apart? It helps us every single day but it is something you have to stay current with. Do not be late on trends or you’ll just get swept away with everyone else trying to catch up, but even with that risk it is one of a band’s best friends in today’s day and age.

Anything else before we sign off?
Honestly so many things but I know our time is short so I’ll keep it brief – be sure to follow us on our socials and be sure to keep up with us. We are going to be pretty active over the next couple months so we are excited to share what we have up our sleeves with you. Our singer Dorian has great hair. He paid me $5 to sneak that in there. Also, I want you to know that halfway through replying to this interview that I ate about my entire body weight in sushi, fell asleep at my desk for an hour, and woke up not knowing what day it was. Oh, and check out Neale’s podcast, The Microphonies, on Wildfire Radio, iTunes, GooglePlay, etc.
