In this interview spotlight, I chat with Dave Kim of Moonroof about the latest music, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create?
We originated in a small town called Bloomsburg, but once we took music seriously we moved over to a strong music scene near Philadelphia. I would describe Moonroof as an indie-pop band that is radio-friendly. To me, it’s a universal sound with catchy hooks and ear-catching instruments. The songs are easy to sing back, danceable, and head bobbers. We recently released our latest track “Trojans” on all streaming platforms.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
Honestly I always loved to sing, however, I wanted to be an actor instead of musician so I took up being a theater major at Bloomsburg. Dan Rendine the drummer always had a love for music , but we never focused on being musicians in college , just cause we were busy being students. The love for acting came to a close, and I was searching for something to fill that void. Dan started the band by asking me to be the singer and its been a happy partnership ever since. We added talented musicians like Danny Walsh and Julian Baseman. And yes, Baseman does play the bass.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
What motivates me is the thought of people listening to our songs and enjoying themselves. The look of people’s faces when we perform live makes me feel on top of the world. I will never forget the day we played at the BB&T center opening up for the Lumineers and Death Cab for Cutie. I always say with the hard work we put into our craft, why not us?
Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?
We do everything ourselves from booking shows to running our social media accounts. What I’m trying to get to is that we do all of the promoting ourselves for all of the previous releases. We wanted to create a spark with this release so we finally reached out to some professionals under Effective Immediately PR to help us with this project. In addition, we want to open more connections to bloggers and people of the music scene.
On the flip side, Social media has helped us gain attraction. Without social media, we would have never won the 104.5 Birthday show. The contest was a fan voting contest and many of our fans shared constantly to vote for Moonroof. Some bands get noticed for their live performances and some get noticed for their online presence. Moonroof is a band trying at both.
Where can we follow you online and hear more music?
