The Walsh brothers Ryan and Shane are joined by Jeremy Hayes to form the psychedelic rock trio Mojo Bozo’s Electric Circus. Residing in Annapolis, Maryland, this talented trio draw influences from surf rock, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with members of the band about their latest project (Germ City), challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create?
Ryan: Annapolis, MD — Psychedelic Gypsy Surf
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Ryan: Influenced by soundtracks and compilation albums. If I were to make a soundtrack of my own life, I’d hope it sounded like some of my favorite films.
Jeremy: For motivation, personally I’m never fully satisfied with anything I release. I always focus on what could be improved and how it can be better the next time we go in the studio. That motivates me to work on the next thing and how to improve over the previous work.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
Ryan: Last summer was a bit intense so there are moments of releasing frustration and heaviness. However we usually like to get back to being the lounge surf band for your Halloween party.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Jeremy: Access to better quality and lesser expensive studio equipment over the years is a double edged sword. Artists can release music easier and faster than ever. But it also means there’s a lot more content out there to compete with. Sometimes it can be hard to cut through all the noise, so to speak.
What was the last song you listened to?
Ryan: Pink Floyd – “Careful with That Axe, Eugene”
Jeremy: Air – Highschool Lover
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Ryan: Vinyl for life.
Jeremy: Vinyl! For convenience while on the go, Spotify.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Jeremy: Spotify is my go to as well as the rest of the guys in the band. If I’m supporting a band I’m into, I’ll buy it on Bandcamp as well.
