Most people go their entire lives without enjoying even a fraction of the experiences already had by singer and songwriter Maria Elena Little. She has lived in three countries, has collaborated with one of North America’s top music producers, and is set to release her debut EP.
The EP, entitled Mind Space, drops in the fall and features six songs showcasing her unique blend of pop, indie, folk, and country. Four of the songs were recorded in China but were produced in Denver by Matthew Tryba, who has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Maroon 5 and Ariana Grande.
“Working on the EP with Matt introduced me to a lot of things that I’ve never experienced, says Maria Elena. “Because I was in China and he was in Denver, the process was challenging because we had to be so specific when talking to each other about the direction the songs were going.”
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Maria Elena Little about her latest project, motivations, challenges and more.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m half American half Ecuadorian, and music to me is all about capturing the emotions present in our lives. I love to make music that tells a story.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I have always loved to sing since I was a toddler. I started playing piano at the age of 6 and I picked up the guitar when I was 12. When I started learning the guitar my dad challenged me to write a song, and I did just to prove a point to him 🙂 But I fell in love with songwriting once I started I couldn’t stop. One of my close friends has dealt with a lot of mental health issues throughout his life, and when he tells me that my music helps him, it motivates me to keep going.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
My EP “Mindspace” is definitely different than my last EP because it reflects the growth in me as a person and as a writer. I wanted to create a good mix of music that conveys a wide range of feelings that people can relate to.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
There has been a big shift in the music industry. There are so many independent and successful artists. You can build a fanbase by yourself and share your music with people all around the world. That to me is pretty incredible.
What was the last song you listened to?
Sour Patch Kids by Bryce Vine
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I love jamming out to my favorite songs on Spotify if I’m in the car or going on a road trip. However, there’s something special about Vinyl. It’s a beautiful experience and it seems to be coming back.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify is great because I can look at the playlists made by my friends and family as well as discover new artists that are truly so talented. I love finding new music and Spotify is great for that.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
My facebook page is where I post updates on my music and my life. But instagram is definitely my favorite social because it allows me to get to know people better 🙂
