In this interview spotlight, I chat with Marcus Morales about his latest release, motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from South Central Texas. I create a form of Rock N Roll music.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I learned how to play Mariachi style trumpet as a kid through a church program. Also, at a young age I heard a commercial song for Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. It went, “ I got the blues, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.” That really stuck with me, it was a game changer, haha! Just messing about macaroni being my inspiration. Creating genuine music and performing keeps me going.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
Well, I hired a PR team for one! But the main thing for me is this EP is the best sounding work I’ve done so far, (as far as the recording process and capturing the instruments). Dylan Fischer (head engineer) and Lindsey Kappa (assistant engineer) did a great job of capturing my sound. Yes, I’m just trying to release good quality music into the world.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Being heard, and keeping your head above water. Whether it’s pulling out my iPhone to record an idea, and sending the file to my keyboard player to work on and listen to, technology has helped in so many ways. With digital recording technology anyone can record, release, and share their music to so many platforms. Although it adds to the saturation, it’s still cool to think that people can create whenever, and wherever they want.
What was the last song you listened to?
Maria También by Khruangbin out of Houston, TX. Look them up!
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I prefer all three! Although I listen to MP3s mostly because of convenience.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Apple Music. Only because it is already taking up space on my iPhone, so I just went with it, haha! But I hear all the cool kids are doing the Spotify.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Facebook, instagram (@marcusmoralesmusic), and bandcamp are great places to connect with me. I should be launching an official site soon.
Anything else before we sign off?
Yes. Thank you for your time and I hope you all follow me, and enjoy my music. Much love to you all!
