In this interview spotlight, I chat with Malcolm Brickhouse about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
I am from Brooklyn, New York. My music really doesn’t have a specific genre, but it’s been described as a mixture of rock, metal, soul with a hip-hop cadence.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
When I was little, my best friend and I liked the music in WWE and AMV videos and decided to start our own band (Tears of Blood aka Unlocking The Truth). My parents thought we were good and signed us up for Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. We won the first round but lost the second round, but we wanted to keep things going. So, my parents had another brilliant idea; to perform in Times Square and one of our videos went viral, the phone starting ringing off the hook, we got signed to a label, published a book, filmed a documentary and the rest is history.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
Compared to the music I’m known for from my first album “Chaos”, I have grown since then. I explore with different styles of creation and wanted to see how far I could take the Rock sound and mix it with more modern sounds; thus, the creation of my single “Rapture.” Hopefully, it doesn’t come across like it was forced.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
There was an adjustment period after graduation, whereas my schedule changed, I didn’t see my friends as often, my departure from Unlocking The Truth, adapting to being a solo artist and just starting over. However, one of my biggest challenges during these times was dealing my mental health (i.e., anxiety and depression) and my struggle with addiction. I was trying to be happy but the music I was creating was about loneliness, but life goes on and here I am still creating the music I love.
What was the last song you listened to?
According to my phone, the last song I listened to was 21 Questions by Rx Papi.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
I prefer streaming platforms. It makes listening to music much easier.
