In this interview spotlight, I chat with Madelyn Mandry about her latest music, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m originally from Lubbock, Texas, but I just moved to Nashville, Tennessee, last month. I would describe my style as Indie pop.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Music is something that I have always loved and it became my passion when I started writing songs at the age of fifteen. I honestly keep going because I cannot imagine doing anything else. My genuine love for it keeps me motivated when it gets challenging.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
This release was my first Ep. Before that, I had only released singles. This is my favorite release thus far because I put the most time and effort into making it exactly what I wanted it to be. I can really look back and say that this Ep is who I am as an artist. I really love that.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
One big challenge I have is getting noticed in the digital music age. So many people are trying to make it through social media and it can be a challenge to stand out amongst the crowd. On the flip side, technology has really helped me to be able to put my music out there by just filming a short video and putting it on instagram. Social media has opened the door for a very fast way for your listening to hear what you have been working on.
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song I listened to was “Heartless” by Julia Michaels and Morgan Wallen. I absolutely love Julia Michaels and her style of writing.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I actually have a record player back home, so I do love a good vinyl. I would go to the antique stores and pick out some really cool records from Carol King or the Beatles.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I have always loved Spotify and sound cloud. I love Spotify for all the personalized playlists. I think SoundCloud is really cool, because they have a lot of tracks that are homemade. Sometimes the tracks that are stripped back and acoustic are the coolest to hear.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Spotify is great to listen to my music, but I also love connecting on instagram @madelynmandry. I will post clips of covers and original songs that are unreleased on my Instagram page.
Anything else before we sign off?
Thank you so much for talking with me. I hope “Midnight to Morning” is something you can both dance and cry to when listening. I desire for people to enjoy it in every aspect of life, whether you are having a slow day at work or you are headed to a fun night out with friends.
