Madam Sad started as a folk project between Maddison Schreiber (they/he) and Evelyn Charlotte Joe (they/them). Six years ago, Maddison felt pushed to be a musician out of love and spite, which to this day continues to follow into their art. Maddison and Evelyn spent around two years working on this upcoming album, through which they both suffered from poverty and flare ups with disability. With the colonial state of the world, post capitalism and economic failure, many artists are going through heart-wrenching measures to make the most simplest of results, and that’s something they experienced too.
Their song, “Hope For You,” has two parts, both inspired by love for different people. A feeling of rejection and loss for something that was never real, a sort of limerence.
The song title is a way of holding myself accountable to make sure I am always hoping for the happiness of those who have hurt me. I also do get to a more genuine place where I feel compassion for an ex-lover’s success, and that’s a nice kind of sad. – Maddison
1. What can you share with readers about your new project?
My new project is my first in studio album, as well as the most ambitious instrumental wise. All the songs have a cleaner sound as well as more variety in arrangements. The theme of the whole album is writing love songs about the people you make music with, with a sad spin to things.
2. How does this release compare with your other projects you had in the past?
This single has a stop and go element half way through the song that is not often something I do, as well as beautiful touch and go with strings, piano, and more.
3. What about this single makes you most proud?
That I finished it. It was really hard to finish. Emotionally I was heartbroken and triggered. I was emotional as well from having to call it early from lack of funds. So working with what I had and pushing through all the pain was extraordinary work. I had a lot of help from the community too with art trades and pro bono work. Its beautiful for me to hear how interwoven all the lives are in “hope for you.”
4. What motivates you to keep going?
Releasing music for me is to end the project and move onto the next. Its a big weight off my shoulders. Making the song originally was to get out pain about confusion and desperation for a romantic partner. I definitely hope people find love or feel love when they listen to this song, thats one of my favourite feelings when I listen to melancholic music.
5. If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why?
I have a complex and expansive relationship with myself, and part of accessing me is by writing songs. Its like another world. Truly just a really great somatic practice for me. The busyness in my brain doesnt really go away outside of that, so I always have to come back to the art to help with sanity. Theres an additional feeling of ambition that has me so indescribably frantic over whats next. I just really like music and imagination.
