Columbian-American artist Lukaijah’s new album “Rise,” sets the tone for an empowering new brand of consciously aware hip-hop. Raised in San Francisco amidst a melting pot of incredible musical influences, including classical music, rock, and hip hop, he trained in piano composition before finding his way to poetic hip hop. Unlike many mainstream counterparts, Lukaijah infuses every rhythmic moment with wisdom, strength, and uplifting words that encourage listeners to find their true Purpose in a chaotic world. With his new release, he uses the basis of power and freedom to remind us all we have what it takes to tackle our inner, and outer, demons.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Lukaijah about the latest release, adapting during these crazy times, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
I am from San Francisco based out of Hawaii and LA. My music is conscious hip hop with infusions of classical and jazz. I integrate piano solos in some of the beats to provide a distinct sound to the songs, such as in Lion Tribe.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
I always loved music as a child, my favorite toy as a baby was this soft piano that made sounds. I started classical piano at age 9, picked up jazz saxophone in middle school, and got into freestyle rapping in High School. From there my musical passions continued along with the passion of inspiring others along the evolutionary path.
How does your latest project “Rise” compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
My album Rise is my first album tuned to 432 Hz, and I decided to only rep 432Hz music so it is my only album out at this time. I included songs spanned over a few years, so there are different shades of my artistic style, but ultimately there is the same theme of positivity, empowerment and wisdom throughout the album. My aim was to bring lyrics that are inspirational yet not cheesy, so that people can dance and rock out while having positive conscious lyrics infusing their minds.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
Staying true to my messaging and making music for the sake of the soul and service is what I am about. I was tempted with an offer that would of granted me a farther reach, more fame and financial success, however there was too much compromise required in that opportunity. I am happy to build slowly and steadily and maintain the purity of my artistry than partner with those who do not share the same values of integrity.
What was the last song you listened to?
Marcus Gad – I want to Know
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
I prefer Vinyl, however I listen mostly to mp3’s and Spotify for convenience of being a traveling artist.
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
This is not a time to be docile and passive. As my album says it’s a time to ‘Rise,’ to step forth with your convictions to fulfill the unique purpose you are here for. Lions do not wait for others to guide them, they own their own authority and pave the way. Rise up. Claim your Authority, and Live your Purpose.
