Dream pop artist Leezy has released her newest single, “Cocaine Kisses.” Combining soft, breathy vocals and hauntingly beautiful harmonies with a melancholy bassline, the track narrates a relationship romanticized by drug use.
“Cocaine Kisses” follows themes of drug-induced vulnerability found in Leezy’s previously-released singles. The track, however, focuses more on the high of the moment and the somewhat flawed link between a romantic relationship and the high of a drug. “It’s about how I used to associate a certain drug-induced experience with a person or relationship,” Leezy explains. “I was able to ignore a lot of red flags because of how good it felt to be high in the moment.” Melancholy lyrics like, “I can’t feel my heart when I’m high on you” depict Leezy’s post-rehab reflection on the seduction of addiction. She credits the song’s narrative to her own experience as a former addict who glamourized drug use. “Although it may seem like a drug can ‘make you better,’ a love affair with substances is always toxic — full of ups and downs, break-ups and make-ups,” Leezy confesses.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Leezy about the new single, musical memories, motivations and more.

What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?
Cocaine Kisses is special because I started writing it before I got sober, and back then meant something totally different to me than it does now. I was partying a lot and going on these big benders. I was super high one night, and I was kissing this guy… and I thought “Cocaine kisses make it better,” and then I was like OH! SONG TITLE! It felt sexy and fun, and was very much a glamorized telling of everything I was actually going through. When I hear the song now, I think it really speaks to how seductive addiction can be, especially with how normalized party culture is. Social drug use can make us feel deeply connected to people, but in reality, it’s all a show; when you pull back the curtain, everyone is seeking an escape from something. So I think it’s an important song to share because it highlights what I’m sure a lot of young people might be feeling– whether they’re an addict or not.
How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?
I think it differs sonically from the last few. As I keep writing new music, I’m always experimenting with new sounds. And depending on what I’m listening to at the time, I feel inspired by different genres. On the other hand, it’s the same in that my lyrics and my poetry are authentic. What I’m always trying to accomplish is telling my story in a way that’s true to my experience. I really want to paint the picture and evoke those feelings within the listener.
What motivates you to create music?
My sobriety motivates my music and vice versa. Writing and singing are both very cathartic for me, so sharing my story has been a huge part of my healing process. I like to think of it as me helping my inner child to make her dreams come true.
What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?
I was in the choir at school, and I remember in the 4th grade I was chosen to sing a solo for the spring concert. HUGE deal at the time. I think that’s the moment I realized I was a good singer– because before, I knew I liked to sing, but that was the first time anyone (aside from my mom) encouraged me.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
There’s this guy on TikTok (@will.paquin) who is so fucking sick on guitar. Like so talented. I’m a big fan. His writing reminds me a lot of Elliott Smith, who’s one of my favorite artists. and I think it would definitely mesh well with my vocals. Whenever I see his videos, I always hum a little melody over it.
What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?
The last song I listened to was “Overcome” by Tricky. I really can’t pick an all-time favorite. I’ve got a whole list for each genre. But lately I’ve been really obsessed with trip-hop, so I’ve had artists like Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky on repeat.
