Formed in Copenhagen Denmark January 2021, Lady started its early life as a trio, consisting of Cecilie Petersen (vocals), Danni Kofod (guitar) and Lay (lead guitar). Only a couple of months later Lady became a quintet when Lasse Knudsen (bass) and Otto Tønsberg (drums) joined the band. As each band member comes with their own musical baggage, Lady is a melting pot of influences, from early blues to 80’s hardrock. Lady is a rock ’n roll band with a raw and fierce sound. From the dirty guitar to the crisp vocals.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with members of Lady about the latest music, adapting during the pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
We are based in Copenhagen, Denmark. About our style of Music, we would probably describe it as pure rock n roll. As a band we are a big pot of different musical backgrounds and influences, ranging from blues to 80´s hard rock. So, you will find our songs to be within that range.
We’re inspired by the big rock n’ roll bands but we have our own sound which we think differentiate from others. We have a distinctive feel and sound, and no matter what song we are playing, there is no doubt what band is playing.
How did you guys get together?
Well, we have all been playing between 10-13 years, and we hung out a lot when we were teenagers and we started playing music together. Then some of us lost contact, and we all played in different bands for some years. Lay, Danni and Cille met through high school. Lay and Danni quickly found a shared passion for the guitar, and rock n roll. They have been playing together since, looking up to other Lead and rhythm guitar heroes such as Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and Slash and Izzy. In the second year of high school, Cille joined the duo and added some much-needed vocals. They played with different constellations for some years, but when covid hit, they got a new place to rehearse. They started looking for a drummer, and as Cille knew Otto Tønsberg from the teenage years he got to audition, and has been the drummer in Lady ever since. By chance Danni ran into Lasse Knudsen an old-time friend and guitarist who picked up the bass and joined the band.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
As we’re a new band we’ve only released two singles ‘Rolling Stone’ and ‘Mountain High’ but our upcoming EP ‘In Red’ features two brand new songs that will show what direction our music is going. Our goal with our EP is to show some of our range and ultimately what the soul and sound of the band is.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
We have had difficulties getting gigs as covid made all venues move their schedule, so most venues are completely booked for a year. We did use the time under the lock down period to create the Lady sound and deciding on which songs we wanted to release on our EP. We don’t feel the lockdown limited our creative fire but ignited it.
What was the last song you listened to?
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, its such an epic song with a great composition and feel, and Fleetwood Mac as a band is interesting. Their songwriting and history are like no other.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Vinyl! No doubt! There is ritual feeling when putting on a record. You interact with media in a more personal way, and it makes you listen to the entire album instead of only listening to singles.
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
On our Instagram, Facebook and our own band website where we will be selling the physical version of our upcoming EP. It will be available as CD and streaming for a start from the 17. of June 2022.
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
