KMS Music, in association with Off The Record, are excited to announce the release of Korsunnuz debut EP, Negative Earth which is now available! Wielding disparate, even conflicting, influences from stoner and alternative rock, the six tracks are a musical journey from the Palm Springs desert scene, via Seattle, to the heart of their native UK.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Korsunnuz about the new release, technology, surviving a pandemic and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
We’re from the UK. The band has it roots in a goth metal type band from the 2000s. Three of us were in a London based act together. We did look at a reunion thing but opted to head off and do a new style that was more what we listen to now.
I personally live in Sheffield. Which is my kinda town and punches well above its weight for musical legacy. There’s a bit of that in Korsunnuz. We do have rock ok there but also alternative and even a soupçon of gothic.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz ?
Ive done music since I was young. I just think it’s the best way to communicate and get ideas across. It’s a tool of expression. To misquote a film. When seven people talk at once it’s nonsense but with music it’s a perfect harmony.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
Negative earths really born from a trip across the states about a decade ago. There’s lots of stuff to unpack but the road trip can be escapism. Literally. I think parts of the ep are what I’m escaping from. Others are what I’d want to escape to. And then there’s an obsession with a certain George miller directed series of films.
There’s themes there though. Definitely.
We also wanted to be super stripped down and raw on this release. All the rough edges are there. The rusty tailpipe if you will.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
Lockdown was certainly eventful. I separated from my wife of 20 years so that made things even more fraught. But musics one way to process trauma I guess. Probably the best way.
What was the last song you listened to?
Ol 55 by Tom Waites.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Horses for courses. We really wanted to do vinyl on this release and it’s crying out for it. But we don’t get the copies til February .
Beyond that it’s the speakers that really make a difference to me.
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey
Live is always best. Straight from corpus to cerebellum.
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off ?
Remember. It’s just a ride. Take care.
