Calgary’s Kayla Williams is a yacht-pop songstress who pays homage to ’70s soft rock royalty, such as TOTO, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, and the Doobie Brothers. A seasoned musician, Williams adds her bold feminine flair to the genre, delivering a positivity-forward, feel-good throwback tribute with a glittery, vibrant energy.
“Come Close” is a summer anthem! I wanted to write a really upbeat, catchy and danceable tune with a retro feel but through a pop filter. Lyrically it’s about those good chemicals you get flooded with when someone you’re into comes close. It’s lovey dovey, flirty and one of the most feel-good songs I’ve ever written.
Tell us about your new project.
My new single, “Come Close,” is the second release from my upcoming EP, RETRODELIA. This single and album are a delightful throwback to the smooth sounds of the ’70s and artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Hall & Oates. However, I’ve added a pop twist and a feminine touch to create a unique blend.
How does this release compare with your past projects?
This release is a departure from my usual style. Yacht-rock, known for its lighthearted and feel-good vibes, is a new direction for me. I’m accustomed to writing more melancholic songs, but after the tumultuous year of 2020, I wanted to create music that offers an escape and evokes the same feelings of joy as the old classics.
What are you most proud of in this single?
I believe “Come Close” is my catchiest and fastest-tempo song to date, offering a dose of retro pop goodness. The musicians who contributed to the track brought my vision to life, and I consider it one of my best vocal performances. The solid bass and funky guitar add to the song’s appeal.
Did you have a specific goal for this release?
The goal was to create pop music that combines a throwback feel with a modern twist, and I believe we’ve achieved that in “Come Close.”
What inspires and motivates you to keep making music?
The thrill of pouring my emotions into a song, hearing it come to life in the studio, and then performing it live in front of an audience is a unique high I can’t find anywhere else. Music runs in my veins, and despite the challenges of the industry, creating art is an addiction that grips my soul.
If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
In an ideal world, I’d love to collaborate with Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys, as he’s a significant influence on my musical journey. Additionally, collaborating with Isabella Manfredi, an Australian artist from The Preatures, would be a dream. Her writing style and her retro pop sound align with my aspirations, and I believe our vocal tones would blend beautifully.
What was the last song you listened to, and who are your favorite artists?
I’m currently listening to “Chelsea Blakemore” by Beatenburg. I’ve become obsessed with their unique sound. My all-time favorite artists include yacht-rock legends like The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac, along with contemporary artists like Andy Shauf.
