Kaijin Solo is a contemporary singer/songwriter based on the NSW Central Coast with a blues rock influence.
Universal Love is an experiment in letting other people find their way into his music. The idea came about from jamming original songs live with a host of different people on the local open mike circuit. The result is an electric mix of ideas that provides a solid rocking sound-scope for the lyrics.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Kaijin about the new music, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am from the Central coast NSW Australia, I create music that is drawn from several different influences both in my life and from the radio and recordings I listened to growing up. I think every note of music you hear you will in someway recreate. Currently the sound is a five piece with a feel you can move to.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I started playing originals at open mike and was open to letting other people get up and join in, the spontaneity and totally raw incidental actually worked and I got some incredible feedback.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
When I walked into the studio, I put the arrangements down and said, that’s it, I’m letting go of the baby, what that did for the creative synergy you couldn’t have planned better.
This was 100% different for me, and even a little scary, but it has pointed the arrow to my next creative cycle.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I think keeping focused is a challenge, I find I need to keep on keeping on what I’m actually on about.
The technology is fantastic but music is more than technology.
The other thing is keep positive, there is a lot of music out there and I find it’s important to not get gobsmacked, the fact that there is a lot of music out there means there is a lot of places, to put your music.
So mostly for me the challenge is about perspective.
This time round The Cloud has been a big help, also my studio managed to remediate 10 tracks I had on 2 inch tape, so we can remix with today’s sounds this is a huge bonus for me.
What was the last song you listened to?
Living in a Ghost town by the Stones
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I was actually liking MP3s and thought this was the way everything was going, but people have asked for the CD of this EP, so I’m modulating.
Also I’d like to do a 12 inch complete with a pop art cover that’s one thing I miss.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Lately its Bandcamp, for their platform very user friendly for indies.
Spotify also.
