Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
Based out of Toronto, Joyslam is Canada’s premiere Aboriginal (Mohawk) Recording Project created by Solo Artist RJ Martine.
Joyslam continues to delight music fans of ALL genres with their unique brand of high energy movin’, groovin’, Aboriginal Funk Rock, Dance & Pop infused Reggae/Ska music. Combined with their unbridled new WOW factored hybrid sound.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
I have always loved music and was inspired by my Mom and Grandfather. Apparently, I was an annoying kid who needed to have music playing or I’d pester my Mom till they did.
I truly believe that music, has been ingrained in me as the strongest form of communications throughout history and in EVERY culture. Music, especially in Aboriginal culture, are the means in which we “tell the stories of everything that we’ve heard or seen”.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
The “Spirit Star” album is an Awesome Mix of Funk Rock, Native American, Pop, Alt Rock, Country Blues and Dance. I’ve listened to a lot more styles of music lately and have embraced more genres than in previous albums. It was fun adding and mixing different aspects of Country to Funk to Rock to see what would happen. The result is a Newly Innovative Hybrid Sound from the Creative Soul & Musical Mind of Joyslam’s RJ Martine.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
Trying to stay positive and inspired when everything around is so negative and blah. I’ve really missed playing live. I was able to do a few of the Solo Shows before the restrictions canceled the remaining gigs.
What was the last song you listened to?
My brain has been in weird mode and I’ve been listening to a lot of 70’s music. The last track was 10cc – I’m not in love
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
I like vinyl for the sound but prefer CD’s it is a way to have a physical copy of an album with the ability to play it on more systems like computer or radio etc.
