In this interview spotlight, I chat with singer/songwriter Jiggley Jones about his latest project, motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from, and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications).
I’m from Southeastern Pennsylvania about an hour west of Philadelphia and just east of the Amish country of Lancaster County. As far as the music I write, and if I had to name my own genre it would be Hill Billy Pop, haha. I heard a friend call my music Folk Fusion which I thought was cool but in reality Folk Rock/Americana would probably work.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
It’s just something that I mentally latched on to when I was a kid. Just listening to music became part of me, and a passion. As I got older into my late teens I started playing the bass guitar in bands and then moved on to writing as time went by.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
The biggest difference would be that I produced this one myself. That gave me the leeway to develop the “sound” which was something that I couldn’t do on the last release. I thought, for example, that the last release didn’t necessarily have enough overdubs of instrumentation to add “color” within the music. This time I set out to make an entire album that had something different to say “color wise” within each separate song.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over-saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
What a great and relevant question. Technology has given the indie musicians a convenient and viable platform for promotion now, not to mention better ways to record their music and create a better visual package, and because of that the scene has become over-saturated. So on one hand technology has helped immensely and on the other hand it’s created a clutter that’s hard to stand out in. The good thing is without the digital music age I might not be talking to you now in this format if you get what I’m getting at. On the challenging side, the music listener, who basically has control of whether your music will go to the next level or not, has morphed into a person with a phone. It’s all about convenience and apps and speed and videos etc… It’s not about headphones, an easy chair and a cup of coffee anymore. The ultimate listening environment has disappeared.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Ah ha, here technology puts it’s best foot forward, haha.
