Jessie Deluxe has released her latest album Magic! The album snakes its way from beautiful choruses to outcries of death and uncertainty, and features Jessie Deluxe’s melodic vocals to contrast the harsh soundscape.
“It’s a combination of apocalyptic visions mixed with operatic melodies and screams that reach for hope in the middle of a world in disruption,” says Jessie. “We worked on the album for about 6 months in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a dream to record with my longtime friend and guitar hero Dave [Catching]”
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Jessie about the new release, musical memories, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
What’s something you’d like readers to know about MAGIC?
This album was made with a lot of love in just 3 days at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree CA. All the music was recorded live.
The lyrics for the song “Magic” were actually written on the last day of recording. I saw a little magician figurine in the room I was staying in and it inspired the lyrics, and also the name for the album.
How does this album compare with your other releases? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?
I am always striving to reach the next level personally with my songwriting, playing and singing. I am very proud of what we achieved on this album as a band and engineering team as well as capturing the sounds in my head and vocal layers and ideas.
What motivates you to create music?
I am motivated and inspired by other musicians and artist as well as the love and support I receive from my fans and family. Living in New Mexico is very inspiring as well. The beauty of the huge skies and desert scapes create a platform to get lost in nature and also journey within yourself.
What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?
When I was 7 years old I went to the Children’s Museum in Boston. I saw a stage with lots of lights flashing on it and loud music playing. I ran up and started dancing and a bunch of kids and their parents circled around the stage and started clapping! I knew at that moment I wanted to be a performer!
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Jimi Hendrix and Bowie would be 2 artist I would’ve loved to jam and write with. Trent Reznor has always been one of my favorite artist as well as Bjork, PJ Harvey and Mike Paton!
What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?
I actually just listen to the Moroccan Lounge station on spotify pretty much everyday as well as The Weekend. Favorite artist would probably be Nine Inch Nails. I love the intensity and distortion.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
Thank you so much for your time! Enjoy and ROCK ON! There will be new music coming out in the Fall as well! Stay tuned!
