Since 15, Jack Dunn has pushed his limits day in and day out in an attempt to mold himself into what he considers to be a successful and respectable artist. From competitions out in Los Angeles, to shows all around the DMV, Jack Dunn is constantly out there working, writing, and making more material. As of now Jack Dunn is teamed up with Woodz Ent. and Streamway Music Group. They’ve all been hard at work for the past two years both in and out of the recording studio striving for success in the music industry. What separates this team from other “on the come up” groups, is the difference in aspirations, they’re not solely in it for money, fame, or bragging rights. They have an intense passion for music and the progression of it as an art form. Jack aspires to leave an imprint on music history and bring positive change into the lives of his listeners (even if it’s only one person).
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Jack Dunn about the latest release, challenges, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am from McLean, Virginia which is located just outside of the Nation’s capital.
The style of music I create is a raw authentic form of lyrically-technical Hip-hop.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I started playing instruments as a child (Piano, Guitar, Bass guitar) but turned to writing lyrics at the age of twelve as a way to vent, and I saw some of the complex lyrics coming from the writers in hip-hop (Eminem, Nas, Jay-z) and it inspired me to take my songwriting in a different direction, as I was initially writing more alternative rock along to guitar before engaging in rap. What keeps me pushing is not only the fact that music helps me with stress-relief, but also my desire to continue improving not only as a songwriter, but also as an artist.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
It’s different because it’s more of a “pop-type” song compared to what I usually write, which is what I would consider to be more deep. However, It brings that Pop song vibe with it’s beat and hook, along with poweful fast paced bars that are guaranteed to make the listener ask, “Damn, who is this?”. I feel I accomplished what I wanted with this song as far as how it came out sounding, but i’m trying to gain more exposure and be put on the radar (so to speak) with this song.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I would say the biggest problem is the amount of rappers (particularly White ones) that are trying to get put on the map just as I am. It makes it harder to promote your music when people are hesitant to even listen because they heard another up-and-coming artist who may have created this image in the listeners head that most of what they’re going to hear from underground rappers is “garbage” thus making them less likely to expose themselves to new rising artists and instead just stay playing whatever/whoever is in the limelight.
