In this interview spotlight, I chat with J Nicolás about the latest release (Dark Days), adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do you describe your style of music?
I was born & live in Portland, OR. Was raised in Belfast but have been in the states for ages. I’d say it sounds like dad-rock, but singer/songwriter/Americana might be a little more relatable.
What inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
Lord knows! Self injurious tendencies?!? I reckon I’m a glutton for punishment. : ) I quite fancy writing songs. Have done since I was a young lad. I loathe the business of music. Rubbish that.
Tell us about your latest single “Dark Days”. Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
“Dark Days” was born out of a challenge I gave myself to write a song using a prodigiously simple chord progression. It was inspired by trauma bonding and sort of the idea that you can leave that rubbish behind and find happiness in someone you love.
What was your favorite song to record for your upcoming album?
“In Your House”
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented times? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
I didn’t really have any creative challenges. I was very privileged that way. I’m a loner so isolation was grand for me. I say that knowing that there was a tremendous impact on so many—just for me it was sort of business as usual. I write songs every day. It’s just something I do… almost like a meditation. I don’t ever feel like I lack inspiration. I also think the pandemic afforded us some time that we’re unlikely to get again. If one had a bit of discipline, they could get a lot done.
What was the last song you listened to?
I’m in the studio right now recording my third album in a year’s time. It was one of my own—a song called “I’d Like to Talk About It.” Kind of a Motown/Tamla number.
Which do you prefer- Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
I prefer vinyl. I record on analog. I’m quite old school. I use Spotify of course. It’s easy.
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow J Nicolás journey?
My records. I have IG, etc. I feel like if you want to know what I’m about you need only to listen to my music.
I really appreciate your time. Anything else before we sign off?
Thank you for taking the time for me! All I can say is: be kind to each other. The world is a bit rubbish at present, so a little love and empathy goes a long way.
