London based trio IYEARA are preparing to present their dramatic, ominous soundscapes through the release of their debut EP, CONSEQUENCES, out now via TrES-2b Recordings / Ingrooves.
A post globalisation dystopia in a coat of analogue electronica and hacked widescreen visuals, CONSEQUENCES perfectly captures IYEARA’s cerebral synth-pop sound, neatly interwoven with brooding elements of dark wave and post-punk. The release of their debut EP CONSEQUENCES will include new single, the hypnotically intense Exhale which drops on 20th September, as well as previous single Shout; a cover of the Tears for Fears hit, featuring Liela Moss.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with IYEARA about the latest release, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
We all love the 80’s…bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and we also
love electronic beats and dark synths and modern production
techniques. It’s a blend of loads of different elements. Plus a tune.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
We have all done music all our lives. It’s something we just do
because we need to do it….doesn’t really feel like a choice. When
you create something that you’re proud of, you want other people to
hear it/see it.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
Hearing new inventive music always inspires us but we’ll always love bands like The Cure, Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
Having played in bands for many years, the aim for this project was
to be looser with the expectations and confinements. We started
writing and producing songs without ever playing live, and then the
remixing side of things took over. We write and produce for other
artists too. So we feel more like a collective rather than a band.
What was the last song you listened to?
Metal by Gary Numan.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
MP3s for the phone, vinyl for the home.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify seems to be winning for us at the moment….maybe we should
try something new.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
Everything needs money to get you there unfortunately. That can
really hinder the process. You’re right too though, the sheer scale of new
music is huge and it’s obviously hard to connect with people when
there is so much being put in front of them. I guess luck has to play a
part in it all!
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?
We’re pretty active on Facebook and Instagram. Our Spotify page also
has links to loads of remixes that we’ve done for other artists too.
Anything else you’d like to add before signing off?
Come and connect with us. We won’t let you down.
