New York rock artist Ian Bamberger has released his second album, Headaches & Heartaches, featuring singles “I Know I Know Nothing,”“The River,” and “Life Isn’t a Free Ride.”
The 10 track album explores themes of love, death, addiction, and the passing of time, through honest lyrics and narrative songwriting. Bamberger’s both emotionally and technically extensive vocal range is well showcased as it moves from soft to passionate from song to song. Reminiscent of traditional rock and roll anthems with use of real instruments, the album is full of tracks that exist in the same musical and narrative world, while also possessing variation.
“Headaches & Heartaches is my most ambitious and honest release to date. All the songs came together and were finished during the pandemic,” says Bamberger.
In this interview spotlight, Ian and I chat about the new album, ideal collaborations, musical memories and more.
What’s something you’d like readers to know about Headaches and Heartaches?
Headaches & Heartaches is my most honest project to date. The pandemic shaped the songs and my life. If you like 90’s rock, 60’s guitar playing and the Allman Brothers I’m your guy.
How does this project compare with your other albums? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?
I was leaning deeper into creating my own sound. I like to incorporate guitar harmonies into my work, this album was an opportunity to take that initiative even further.
What motivates you to create music?
I love writing, performing, composing and recording. I have been playing guitar for most of my life, playing in bands, studios and everything in-between. Music is my life and despite the hardships that may come with this lifestyle I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Grateful to have the support to be able to pursue this dream.
What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?
Growing up in a musical household with a father who is a songwriter and guitar player! Spent my childhood going to shows in the storied town of Asbury Park & the PNC Bank Center. All the shows and crazy stories that come with them have played a pivotal role in my career and how I go through life.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
I would have loved to collaborate with past geniuses like Sam Cooke, Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix and many more.
Today I would love to collaborate with contemporary songwriters/guitar players like Marcus King, Cory Wong & Billy Strings. All amazing artists in their own right.
What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?
Roy Buchanan “Sweet Dreams”. Probably The Allman Brothers Band.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
