Glasgow risers HYYTS return with their latest precocious pop release, Car Crash Carnivore, out now.
Kicking off with Adam’s ethereal falsetto soaring over soft synth soundscapes, the duo’s disco and alt-pop influences clearly shine through. Adam whimsically stays true to his roots with his own take on ‘skip-hop’ (Scottish hip-hop), creating a sound that feels truly refreshing and unpredictable. Talking about the track, HYYTS elaborate, “Car Crash Carnivore is a warning to all the shapeshifters and monsters that live among us and try to blend in. We wanted all the creatures that lurk in the shadows of show business and politics to know that we’re on to them and there’s no price for our souls”. Fans of the likes of Jungle and MNEK will feel at home here.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with HYYTS about the new release, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into you, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
We love pop music and have always been in love with big hooks, sexy beats and emotional lyrics.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
I was always doing music and theatre and stuff like that but Sam was a little later to the party, he got into it through working in the nightlife scene. But yeah when we started making music together it became apparent that we made something more than the sum of our individual parts and we just feel so good sharing it with people and playing it for them.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
Oh all sorts! A lot of hip hop and dance music as well as pop, too many people to mention. And yeah our taste of music has been getting more and more ridiculous to the point where I’m kind of scared where it’s leading to next. Right now we’re listening to a lot of covers of songs done by dog noises whenever we get drunk.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
I think we’re trying more to express ourselves than accomplish anything particular at this point but we definitely want to make people dance and make friends with people they usually wouldn’t. Also we want to get sponsored by PG tips and also maybe crocs. And as much minions merch as possible.
What was the last song you listened to?
Hahaha right now we are listening to 10 hours and 1 second of cow noises on YouTube.
Which do you prefer? Vinyls CDS MP3s?
Were MP3 kids for sure. I like vinyl and have all my dads old ones and the physical side of that is really cool. But we’re definitely streamers. It’s so easy and really cool to track what’s hot and happening in the music world .
How about this one.. do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp?
Bandcamp is cool, Apple Music is also really cool. But spotify is definitely the best for discovering stuff and staying on top of what’s fresh. Their playlists are tip top.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find fans?
I mean that is a challenge but it’s also cool. Like when In the past could you find some random band from half way around the world and connect with them and share each other’s Music? But it definitely makes it harder as artists. We’re also super happy just bumbling along at our own pace and getting stumbled across by people who feel like they’re in on the secret. The main challenge is definitely being a multi faceted artist and businessperson- you have to be everything these days to succeed.
Where is the best place to connect with you online?
Probably Instagram but Facebook and Twitter as well. Also chat roulette 😉
Anything else you’d like to add before signing off?
Thanks for asking us stuff, been a pleasure! Ps- have switched to 10 hours of dog noises now 😉 peace! HYYTS xx
