Emerging Australian artist Hein Cooper has released his majestic new album Underneath It All via AntiFragile Music.
Defying genre, the album combines electronic, indie-folk and pop sensibilities to create a sound that is completely Hein Cooper’s own. His honeyed vocals soar effortlessly over crisp electronic beats and intricate guitar strums that sound akin to the likes of Chet Faker or Yoke Lore’s unique ability to make ambient alt-pop with an emotive soul. Each track seamlessly weaves together stunning melodies with powerful lyricism, taking the listener on an undeniably immersive journey from the offset.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Hein about the new release, challenges, technology and more.

Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
I’ve been touring around performing solo a load after releasing my first album and it forced me to get more creative on my sound in order to make it possible to play live. I begun using drum machines and samples more, and looping my guitar and all this influenced my initial Folk style. I’d call my style currently to be a mix of Folk/electronic and R’n’b.
How long have you been creating and sharing your music with the public?
Since 2015
Who or what influences your playing and/or writing? Also, what motivates you to keep going?
I draw big inspiration from human connection. I’m looking for the moments that bring us together at heart. I think there is huge amount of disconnection in the world these days and music is a way to bring it all back.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
I guess I’m always attempting to discover myself more deeply and capture that sonically. I don’t think into it too much more than that.
What was the last song you listened to?
Adopted Hometown: Foreign Diplomats
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Vinyl.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify I guess just because I am used to it! It’s also got loads of imformation for artists to see about who is listening to their music.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what are one or two of the biggest challenges you face when trying to attract listeners to your music?
I think the culture of live music is slightly dying. People have everything right in front of their eyes with their devices so there seems to be less people going to watch music in venues, they just watch it on youtube.
Do you gig, tour or perform? Do you ever live stream? Where can music lovers see you live?
I am about to head off on tour all through Europe/Canada and Australia! All dates are on my website: heincooper.com
