His debut single Paperman, was released in April of this year. This debut was followed by the release of Gurba’s second single, Saw You There, as well as his cover of Violet (by Daniel Caesar), which released in August.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Gurba about the music, the challenges, the technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from Long Island, New York. My music is made up of many styles including indie rock, folk, and alternative r&b.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I’ve wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. I’d say the motivation comes from my desire to create something lasting, and inspiring.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
For my third single, I wanted to reimagine one of my favorite songs, “Violet” by Daniel Caesar. I wanted to blend alternative r&b with psychedelic folk. I drew inspiration from late 60s psychedelia. I wanted the dreamy electric guitars to evoke colors reminiscent of Hendrix and Clapton. My first two singles were indie rock oriented, so I felt it was important to have the main element of this song be an acoustic guitar. I also wanted to do away with drums for this one.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I’m always looking to get onto Spotify playlists and music oriented YouTube channels with other great artists. I feel that’s a great way to gain exposure. That’s definitely a challenge, but anything is possible today. It’s never been easier to reach out to people and share your music, despite the over saturation.
What was the last song you listened to?
Hmm… it was something from Johann Strauss.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I loveee Vinyl. I actually just got some 45s made for my first two singles, Paperman (Side A) and Saw You There (Side B). Message me if you want one!
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Bandcamp is definitely the best for finding, supporting, and connecting with amazing independent artists.
