Grace Blue is an alternative-pop music duo based in Los Angeles, California. The music duo, who originally met at their hometown of Tel-aviv, Israel, consists of vocalist Grace Mogz and keyboard player Joseph Arazi. Mogz has been immersed in music since childhood, and used music as a coping method for her depression. She went on to attend music school to pursue her dreams, despite her family not being supportive of her goals. Like Mogz, Arazi was engrossed in the world music at a young age and went to a conservatory in Israel where he mastered classic piano. In May, the duo moved to Los Angeles to make their dreams reality.
In this interview spotlight, we chat with Grace Blue about influences, the latest release, the digital music world and more.
Full Q&A along with links and streams below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We’re based in Los Angeles, but we’re originally from Tel Aviv, Israel.
Our music is pretty much a combination of dark emotionally driven trip hop, alongside catchy up-tempo alternative-pop.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
When I was 8 years old I’ve decided that this is what I wanted to do with my life, I loved music so much and it gave me hope at the hardest times.
As a kid I didn’t have a lot of friends and other kids would make fun of me because I was overweight, but I remember that as soon as my class mates discovered that I could sing they would ask me to sing during recess, I became the “class singer”, so that made me want it even more, so then it just went on from there… I started writing songs and became more and more obsessed with different genres of music.
What motives me is that this is my passion, this is the thing that makes me feel complete, I could never give up without a fight.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
This is actually our debut EP, we’ve had different musical projects in the past but they were completely different.
We set out to accomplish putting out something that we love and that is very emotional and really captures what we been through and been feeling for the past couple of years, in hopes that it might help someone and make him feel like they’re not alone.
Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)?
I think the digital age gives the independent artist more ways to gain new fans, everything has it’s downsides but we also have fans on Facebook from the other side of the world who would have never gotten to know us without it.
Where can we connect with you online and discover more music?
Anything else before we sign off?
Keep an eye on our debut EP that’s about to drop in the next couple of weeks, and thank you!
