In this interview spotlight, I chat with Glytsh about the music, dream collabs, memories and more,
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?
Hella: Probably the biggest thing is that although we’re a duo formed of 2 women, we are doing this band primarily as musicians. We get asked all the times what it feels to be a woman in music etc but we think the best way is just to make great music and don’t let anyone discourage you!
Luna: We’ve started this band with specific standards in mind to deliver the best work we could. Being proud of our achievements is very important to us as it’s what keeps us going. Each of our songs, the cover of Closer included, is a reflection of our life experiences. Lyrics are so personal, singing about topics I wouldn’t talk about, exposing my darkest thoughts, I want it to be served in nice dinner plates therefore the quality of the music production and videos is as essential to us as writing music.
How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?
Hella: This is our 3rd single and the heaviest one so far. I definitely wanted to go towards a more industrial sound and use crazier and noisier guitar tones, combined with tight riffs. The imagery is also angrier and more in your face, and we like this!
Luna: I wanted to experiment more with electronic sounds and synths. Creating more tensions in the build up that leads to the guitar. Make the guitar sounds like an orgasm when it comes in. Hella is the master of writing orgasmic riffs!
For the vocal parts I’ve tried to find a way to make them sounds a bit digital, robotic without using a specific effect but more in the way I’ve used the harmonies, especially in the second verse.
What motivates you to create music?
Hella: Just the pure desire of bettering myself and come up with the best stuff I can. Writing better riffs, more technical and more original, and make them fit in the context of a song is something I am very passionate and excited about.
Luna: Playing live. I like the songwriting process but I hate recording. The idea of fixing something forever frights me but the joy I feel when I play my songs live is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced (aside from sex 🙂 It’s very cathartic and put me in a trance I’m completely addicted to (like… whatever).
What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?
Hella:I remember the very first time I played with a full band as a kid at maybe 15 years old, in the music school I was going to in Switzerland. The song was “Jet Lag” by Simple Plan, which I now think is a terrible song but I remember hearing my guitar loud and distorted for the first time and a real drumkit behind me, and at that moment I knew I had to dedicate my life to this! It’s a long and difficult road but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
Luna: A music contest I won with my first band in Paris. We played this incredible venue called Elysée Montmartre and it was absolutely packed as many bands were in the finale. It was my first time playing in front of so many people on a huge stage. 12 bands were in competition with various prices to win but the winner would go to Germany to play Taubertal festival. I remember the jury announcing the prices of the best bassist, best this best that…. They got to the third position, second but still nothing. At this stage I remember feeling very sad and starting losing all my hopes until I heard him screaming our name for the first position. My whole body was checking so much I couldn’t believe it and I couldn’t even walk. We went to Germany, played this festival the same day Pink was playing. It was incredible. I already knew that’s what I wanted to do but being recognised for something I could sell my soul for and experiencing a mini tour for the first time has been a huge step for me.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Hella : The producer I want to work with the most is Howard Benson. He produced so many of my favorite artists (especially Issues and In Flames) and it would be insanely cool to get his insights and do an album with him. I’d love to collaborate with a rapper for one of our tracks too. I’m gonna think big and say Eminem!
Luna: I would die to get a song produced by Trent Reznor and a featuring with Adam Keefe Horovitz aka Ad-Rock from the Beastie boys.
What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?
Hella: Currently listening to my favorite cheesy R’n’B artist aka B2K. My favourite bands in no particular order are Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Issues, Monuments, Beastie Boys, Ghostemane, In Flames….
Luna: The last song I’ve listened to according to Spotify is (no cheating) “I want you” from Reignwolf. My favourite bands are Led Zeppelin, Nine Inch Nails, Beastie Boys, RATM, Audioslaves, Deftones, Glytsh… wait… what?
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
Hella: We are slaves to the usual internet places. Instagram, Tik Tok, YouTube, Facebook…
Luna: The moon
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
Hella: Trying to come up with a mega inspirational line but all I can think of is “play more guitar and have more sex” so there you go!
Luna: Call your grandma and tell her you love her.
