George Mallas is a Singer/Songwriter based in North Salem, NY. Having been a student of the piano since age 6, the instrument is a natural extension of who he is. His experiences in life, love and family have profoundly inspired his songs, his style, and his passion for playing.
George recorded his first album in 2015 titled “Small Reminders.” Shortly thereafter, George started writing and recording a new collection of songs for his 2018 release titled “unscathed.” “unscathed” is a beautifully produced album featuring talented musicians throughout. The album also features writing collaboration with lyricist Melanie Berti.
George is also part of the musical troupe, The Four Horsemen Songwriters which include singer/songwriters David Ray, Mike Latini and Dave Goldenberg. George also co-hosts the Facebook Live show Sandro, George and the OG each Tuesday night at 7pm. The show features a different singer/songwriter each week.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with George about the new album (Let The Day Decide), musical memories, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?
‘Let the Day Decide” is my 3rd full length album release in 7 years. It’s the first time that I have co-written all but one song.
How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?
This album is more Rock oriented than the others. It also features two singles, ‘History’ and ‘Shine’ which have been well received. Like most other songwriters, my intent is to make the listener feel something, whether its sadness or happiness.
What motivates you to create music?
The motivation to create is inbred. There really is no choice actually; it has to come out! Creating something whether its music or a carving per say makes you feel alive. When I’m not creating, I’m empty.
What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?
Simple answer- James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James and Cat Stevens’ Tea for the Tillerman opened up the musical part of my brain. I absolutely had to start writing.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
Wow! That’s a tough question. For the better part of my writing career, I never considered collaborating. Now, most of my work is through collaboration with lyricist Melanie Berti. I think if I had a choice on collaboration, I would write with David Ray of Missing Keys Music. https://www.reverbnation.com/davidray
What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?
The last song I listened to was Kate Rusby’s ‘Who will sing me Lullabies’. My all-time favorite artist is Joni Mitchell
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
I can be reached on my website: mallasmusic.com and FB.
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
The important thing to remember when releasing an album, is that it’s not all about ‘you’. There are so many others to thank whether is a muse, producer, co-writer, contributing musician, etc… It’s easy to get lost in your own ego. Sharing the accolades is important.
