In this interview spotlight, I chat with Clarksville native, Los Angeles based Free P about his latest project, challenges, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m currently based in Los Angeles, CA. I’m from Clarksville, TN & the style of music I create, I feel, has a jazzy, southern bounce with R&B/Soul along with hip hop elements.
With me being previously living in Atlanta, GA for about a year and half, I’ve brought this southern sound out west while adapting to the sound that is already here. The jazzy feel complements the vibe you catch while being out here next to the Pacific. The many hues of blue, a wave of emotions, represent my style & sound: imagine the waters & the sky touching. That’s Free.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I grew into music, as my dad was in the military band as well as having his own jazz band on the side. At 14, I began making beats on FL Studio. As time progressed, I’ve worked with many artists such as Isaiah Rashad, Michal Da Vinci, Tim Gent, YGTUT, Lorine Chia, WIz Khalifa, The Game, Cyhi Tha Prynce & many more. These last few years, I’ve made my transition into an artist, finding my voice while polishing my sound from working with many artists along the way.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
The last release, “AnyDayNow”, was very blue as far as colors go. A lot of mid tempo songs. My next project, “Reasons We Connect”, will have more purple & orange colors. Definitely more up tempo songs, giving more life to southern bounce. Releasing my newest single, Too Grown, exemplifies the contrast from my previous work.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I feel the most challenging aspects for indie artists are reaching out to media platforms to expand your music & booking shows. If you don’t have connections, in either regard, it’s difficult to make things happen, I’ve come to find out. I understand there’s ways of making it happen on a consistent basis, but I’m still learning as I progress in this industry.
