There Has To Be More is inspired by Eliza Spear’s experience feeling trapped in LA, fueled by the idea that no matter how stuck someone may feel, they possess the inner strength to show them the way out. The track showcases Eliza’s impressive vocal range soaring over what starts off as a simple and delicate piano arrangement and soon crescendo’s into a powerful ballad featuring crashing drums and masterfully played bass.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Eliza about her latest release, technology, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from Los Angeles and I create music that has a Joni Mitchell, Ed Sheeran kind of sound to it. I write honestly and let myself be vulnerable in hopes of connecting with people who feel similarly.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I was surrounded by music as a kid, specifically when my Grandma came to visit. She would play piano all night and I would sit next to her and sing. Looking out into an audience and seeing people sing along to your lyrics is absolutely magical. Everyone is singing along for their own reasons and their own story, but we all sing the same song.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
This is my first release in which I’m actually “selling” the song and myself. I had a release a few years ago but I knew so little about how the music business worked and how to promote myself. With this single, I’ve been doing everything I can to get in contact with anyone and everyone, get the song placed, performing everywhere I can, etc.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Technology has made it possible for me to connect with people who are looking to reach out to me. People from around the world contact me over Instagram or Facebook and tell me how the song has impacted them, and it’s my favorite. However, with that comes the downside of social media in only posting your best self. I’ve seen this effect so many people, including myself. It’s really hard not to compare yourself to others and in return think poorly of yourself.
What was the last song you listened to?
Black and White by The Band CAMINO. Great song. I yelled every line as loud as I could.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
MP3! Just because it’s the modern way to listen to music.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify. I think it’s best with artist representation and connecting with your audience.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Spotify to hear new music (lots of new music coming this year). Send me a message on Instagram (@elizaspear) to chat, or you can always find more information on my website (https://elizaspearmusic.com/).
