In this interview spotlight, I chat with Dom Brown about his latest project (No Genre), challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications).
I’m from Rochester, NY, but I have been living in Buffalo since 2011. I moved to Buffalo because I attended University at Buffalo. I try to make music for every vibe and mood. There’s songs on my album that you can listen to for every type of mood, so I think anyone can relate to any situation that I talk about.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Seeing friends make music in high school is what got me to try to do music and the first song that I made, I played it for people, and they liked it. That’s what keeps me going now because people listen to my music still and being heard in nightclubs and radio, it motivates me to make new music.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
The previous releases were all free and there was less time taken on those releases. I feel like now I’ve been making music for 11 years now, that I wanted to put an album out on streaming services, making more legit because I took the time to perfect it.
I want to be heard by as many people as possible and making music that’s relatable is the way I can do that.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
One challenge is trying to get people to notice me because of how many people make music in my area. Technology has helped me because it’s easy to post and promote, and that’s my way of reaching as many people as possible at the moment.
What was the last song you listened to?
“The Hills” – The Weeknd
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
MP3s because all the technology that I have MP3s can be played on.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I prefer Apple Music, because in my opinion, it’s the easiest to navigate through. I also enjoy the radio stations the app has.
