Atlanta-based rapper, Typical DiV, and accomplished producer, Sean O’Neil, known as SØ, have recently unveiled their highly anticipated collaborative project, “Sounds from the Sunroom.” This album represents the culmination of over two years of dedicated collaboration, marking a significant milestone for DiV as it constitutes his first exclusive partnership with a producer for an entire album. Last week they presented their vibrant new video for “Look 4 Yourself,” an enticing visual experience from the very outset.
In a statement shared on YouTube, DiV provided insights into the release, labeling it his “4th-quarter drop ever.” He emphasized the uniqueness of the project, highlighting that this is the first instance of his exclusive collaboration with a producer from inception to completion on an entire album. The chemistry between the duo, previously showcased in hit singles like “Therapy Or A Bottle?” and “Safe Space,” has evolved remarkably, evidenced by the success of these tracks, boasting nearly 200k Spotify streams.
A testament to O’Neil’s meticulous craftsmanship, “Sounds from the Sunroom” takes listeners on a sonic journey shaped by his expertise. O’Neil, recognized for his work with industry heavyweights such as Metro Boomin, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black, has left an indelible mark on each track. Notably, he contributed to Metro’s platinum album, “Not All Heroes Wear Capes,” where he took on roles in writing, producing, and recording the guitar on the track “No More.”
DiV sheds light on O’Neil’s unwavering dedication to perfection, stating, “Some of the songs you’re going to hear are like the 6th or 7th iteration. I’ve never taken this approach to music. I kind of come from the trunk — we load up the 2-track, I rap over it, I got a crazy engineer to drop the beat and do little accents. But to work with somebody who cares about what they’re doing so much to be like ’Nah, that’s not it. We gotta elevate it even more.’ I mean, I think it just shows in the music.”
“Sounds from the Sunroom” not only signifies a musical collaboration but also encapsulates the transformative power of a partnership fueled by innovation, dedication, and a shared commitment to elevating the artistry. As the album continues to resonate with audiences, it stands as a testament to the artistic evolution sparked by the synergy between Typical DiV and SØ.
Additionally, we had the opportunity to engage in an exclusive interview with the artists, providing further insights into their collaborative journey, which you can explore below.
What can you share with readers about your latest release?
Sean – “Søunds from the Sunroom” is a genre-bending hip-hop album that will bring you into the world of SØ & Typical Div. Coming in at just under 25 mins, it’s perfect for vibing to while driving, partying, walking, working, etc. We’re really proud of this body of work, and it’s a snapshot in time of where we were when Div and I met, and then cultivated our friendship and working relationship.
How does this project compare with your other projects you had in the
Past?
Div – I believe it’s the most concise project in my catalog. No need to skip a single song. No regretted records or lyrics. It’s perfect.
What about this project makes you most proud?
Sean – For me, it’s the different sounds and styles that we experimented with that somehow still sound cohesive.
Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
Sean – We wanted to put out an entire body of work that showed listeners how dynamic we can be.
What inspires you to create music? What motivates you to keep going?
Sean – Music is everything to me. It’s my “Safe Space” (see what I did there). It’s my playground to be creative and expand on any range of emotions or moods that I feel at a particular moment. It’s my therapeutic outlet.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown
– who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a
link so readers can check them out.
Sean – Future, Post Malone, Tom Petty & The Story So Far. I listen to a wide range of music, growing up on country like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, and then gravitating toward the Warped Tour scene throughout my teens. When I first picked up guitar, I played metalcore lol.
Some indie artists I’d like to create with are Shumaq, Amelia, and Wiley From Atlanta.
What was the last song you listened to? Favorite all-time bands/artists?
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
Sean – “Tiffany Nikes” by Wale. Favorite all time bands have to be the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The National. Definitely follow me on Instagram.
I really appreciate your time. Is there anything you’d like to share before
we sign off?
Sean – Thanks for the conversation and for highlighting our music! I’ll be releasing alot of new tunes in 2024 with Div, COLTx, and Hypothetical. These are just the confirmed projects so far. I’m very excited for what’s to come.
