Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
Born and raised from Northern Virginia.
My music style is definitely inspired by synth pop, acts like John Maus and Ariel Pink inspired my song “Still We Stay”. My song “Dont Stop Me Now” is inspired from 90s house music, like Shannon, and Crystal Waters. My latest song “One Touch” is inspired by 70s disco dance music. Acts from “Chic” and bass lines from Nile Rodgers.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Music has always been apart of me. Every family gathering, driving in the car, just hanging out at the house with the family. There will always be music playing, and my family singing and dancing. I didn’t see it as a career till I moved to New Orleans. When I moved here I joined a band “Sexy Dex and the Fresh” and got the opportunity to sing, and play keys. Being in this band developed me as a singer technically, and a performer. I would probably still be at a corporate job if I didn’t have that opportunity, dreaming of being in a band.
What motivates you?
My family motivates me. I do whatever I need to so that one day my mom can kick her feet up and not have to work again. My mom raised us on her own, and I want to see her enjoy life. Music is also the only thing I want to do right now, that motivates me to focus on my music so I can be in a place where that is all that I’m doing.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
This release is the strongest song that I’ve done. It is more cohesive, and shows my abilities I have to produce, and write music. I believed in this song so much that my goal was not to just release it on my Instagram. I felt like it needed a bigger platform.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
The challenge is being overlooked at times. It feels because I am a dark skin black woman that I have to work ten times as hard to get what I want. Sometimes you feel you have to give the people what they want to be herd, and have lots of money to be seen on bigger platforms, and be signed from a huge label.
Technology has helped me write a song when I randomly want to on Ableton, its super convenient at times and its user friendly. Also having social media has helped me inform people of when I have a new song out, and keep them informed of my progress.
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song I listened to was Richenel “Autumn”
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Which ever is more convenient at the time. I feel that vinyl and tapes have a better sound. There are times when I only have a CD player to hear a song, or an aux cable though so I prefer whichever is accessible.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I prefer a platform that pays you a respectable amount of money for the plays you get. So I guess Tidal would be the best, even though I aint got one yet, but I’m working on it. I appreciate that Bandcamp makes it easy for you to upload your songs and its easy for people to pay you for your singles or albums
