This isn’t the first time we’ve chatted with Dan Rose…and most likely won’t be the last.
Dan is back with a new album – This House Is On Fire – themed around climate change, an issue weighing heavy on a lot of our minds.
I was fortunate enough to catch a moment of Dan’s time to speak about the new release, touring, choosing a favorite song, and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Congratulations on the release of your new album “This House Is On Fire”. What about this project makes you most proud? Was there a specific goal you were trying to accomplish with this release?
The goal was to make an album free from all the modern and trending production techniques that makes so much of todays music sound like the same kind of bland bullshit. I wanted to make it sound completely free and honest, no auto-tune or pitch correction, no multi-layered vocals. There’s a lot of one-take recordings on there, even some just recorded on my phone. It’s full of songs that I stand by completely, speaking about the issues that matters most to me. My hope for a sustainable future, the demand for immediate climate action, trying to live a more minimalistic and simple life in this chaotic world.
What inspires you to create music this way? What motivates you to keep going?
I’m driven by a creative purpose, an artistic purpose, you might say. I’m not chasing awards or momentary viral attention. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it just isn’t what I’m after and I just don’t get all that downhearted by the lack of giant streaming statistics and sold out stadium tours, you know what I mean? I started writing songs because I had something to say and that hasn’t changed. I’ve been on a few detours, but my songwriting and is still rooted in wanting to communicate something and explore my views on certain ideas and feelings about the world.
You’ve played live at all sorts of different kinds of venues. What kind of gigs do you prefer?
Yeah, not just festivals and clubs on my past tours. There was rthe school in Reykjavik, the skateboarding bar, the sports bar in Lithuania, the café in Berlin, the Fridays For Future Summer camp, not to mention the climate summits and conventionsb where I’ve been invited to share my songs and stories. I really like to play house shows and other intimate events where we’re all together and we can have some real interaction. I like to play any kind of show, really, but my easy-going attitude and simple set-up is just well suited for intimate and smaller places. If you’re out there, let me know if you want me to come play near you.
Are you planning to tour this album?
I’ve been playing some gigs here and there in Denmark at various events to promote the special cassette tape version of the album and I’ve got a few showcases to peform for invited music business people. I’m hoping they can help me organize more shows and gigs. I’m planning to tour more in 2024, including Sweden and Germany. I’ll be releasing the follow-up to the album next year, so I’m really building something here. If anyone out there is curious or might want to know how they can help me, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Can you choose a favorite song of all time? Or is this an impossible task? If yes, what’s the song? If no, what’s your current Top 3?
“If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next” by Manic Street Preachers from their 1998 album “This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours”. It’s moving, it’s political, it’s powerful. Amazing band with an amazingly interesting history. This song is a cornerstone in my world.
What artists are you listening to these days?
I’ve been listening to other environmentally and social conscious artists like Mat Ward, Peter Vadiveloo, Matt Pless, David Rovics and the legendary Billy Bragg. The world is changing and I like the sound of it.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
Instagram is where I’m most active and connect with other music lovers and climate enthusiasts, find me there, I’m @danrosedk. Let’s talk.
I appreciate your time. Want to say or plug any other projects before we part ways?
Thanks for having me, it’s been a pleasure. I just hope that anyone interested will keep following me and engage with what I am sharing. It’s all about reaching out and meeting one another. So yeah, listen to my songs and send me a message on Instagram or something, I’m right here.
