Filmmaker and rising indie-pop artist, daddi ru, has released their debut single “My Parasite” featuring legendary hip-hop purveyor Grandmaster Caz. The dark, electro-pop track, reminiscent of 2019 Billie Eilish, centers around a toxic relationship that finds Ru feeling used by their partner and at their wit’s end. “My Parasite” serves as an introduction to a new artistic side of daddi ru they haven’t shared before.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with daddi ru about the new release, motivations, musical memories and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
What’s something you’d like readers to know about your latest project?
My Parasite is a song I wrote at the very beginning of the pandemic and I fell in love with it. I was ready to put it out into the world and make a music video right then, but the stars didn’t align quite yet for it. After over two years of (impatiently) waiting, I can’t wait to share its creepy hotness with the world.
How does this project compare with your other release(s)? Was there anything specific you were trying to accomplish?
This is my first release! I think the main thing I am trying to accomplish is proving to myself that I can face my fear of failure and just go for it. It isn’t easy to put my heart out there for all to see and make myself so vulnerable, but I am going to show myself that I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Also, I am hoping to get some people on my side/team!
What motivates you to create music?
The hardships I have experienced in my life are what compel me to create. My music often touches on internal pain that I think many people can identify with which is why I think it is important that I put it out into the world. Being able to connect through music is so powerful, and I can’t wait to connect with individuals who feel heard when listening to my music.
What’s one of your first or most powerful music memories? Did that play any role in driving you to create?
When I was a kid, my dad and I would make up songs in the car together. He would make the beat with his hands on the wheel, and we would take turns improvising silly songs. To this day, improvising music in a jam setting is my favorite form of expression. It is incredibly raw, genuine, and free-spirited.
If you could collaborate with anyone – dead or alive, famous or unknown – who would it be and why? If it’s an indie/DIY artist, please include a link so readers can check them out.
John Lennon. It would be incredible to sit with him and talk about existence, systematic change, the psyche, all that. But I think what would be most fun of all would be to smoke a joint together and just jam some improvised songs.
What was the last song you listened to? And who is one of your favorite all-time bands/artists?
Lately I’ve been listening to a shit ton of Miley Cyrus, she is just hitting my heart strings and she has since her Hannah Montana days too! I listened to Nothing Breaks Like Heart most recently, for the millionth time. One of my favorite all-time bands is definitely Queen. Rock, queer, loud, fabulous.
Where is the best place to find you and stay connected?
Instagram bitches! You can see me being hot, ridiculous, cuddling with my dog, twerking, and some behind the scenes pics & footage of music videos, all that jazz. Slip in my DMs 😉
I really appreciate Your time. Anything else before we sign off?
I can’t wait until queers run the world.
