In this interview spotlight, I spend a few minutes with The Chris White Experience to talk about Volume Three, technology, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
From St Albans Hertfordshire UK. Rock music, progressive rock, and all genres of adventurous music.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Hearing Buddy Holly, Elvis, American 50/60’s music, the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Jazz and Classical!
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
These are unreleased songs and demos which span over 50 years of my song writing and productions – tapes culled from stored recordings – adventures in creating music.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this over saturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Since having The Zombies catalogue finally recognised after 50 years of muted indifference by being inducted in to the Rock and Roll hall of Fame last year, I suppose the main challenge was not being taken seriously. Being a 60’s musician, not many younger people remembered who the Zombies were. Now we have the ability to bypass record labels and release music directly to the public, and it has never been easier to be heard, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that more people will be willing to listen. We are in a much appreciated but very fortunate position of having an audience for our previous work, which allows us immediate access to people we can talk to about our current work.
What was the last song you listened to?
Gregory Porter -‘Revival’
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Prefer Vinyl, but CDs are easier to store and play in my home and car.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
Spotify – easy to access – and I have app on iPhone and computer.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
On our website www.thechriswhiteexperience.com
Anything else before we sign off?
The albums we are releasing now under The Chris White Experience encapsulate a lot of material from the end of The Zombies up to the current day, which we felt had some small amount of musical value. We released three volumes in 2019, and plan to continue with that schedule in 2020, to bring a number of wonderful unheard performances into the public arena for the first time. Hopefully there will be something for everyone amongst the many recordings. It has been a shock to me to rediscover so many fantastic writers and performers, and sharing them was the only thing to do.
Thank you for listening.
