In this interview spotlight, I chat with Nashville singer/songwriter Chris Hurst about his latest project (A Storie’s Tale), motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I am from a place that aches with the burden and burns with the soul of a thousand suns. The depth of my surroundings allow me to express in the realm at which my heart desires. I stand in place and try not to run from the feelings which allow me to express what needs to be said.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
When I open my eyes in the morning I have only what is in front of me, and what is in front of me determines the fate of my day. Just as I believe the door to be closed then my eyes find the door still open. The moments where my inspiration wants to flee with the changing moons do I find myself still creating. As the dust settles around me I find myself standing still on a moving platform.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
The feeling that I had never known and had always wanted to experience. The sensation of the essence of light and dark swimming in the sea of uncertainty. Another time to put pen to paper and allow the ink to pour out.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
As I watch the sun crest in the morning and set in the evening my skin touches the fabric of my clothes. I smell the change of season in the air, and I taste the bitter touch of too many elbows clashing. Those who look up, just for a moment, see where the next stone may land, but the bustle and business try to distract me from myself. One’s hand has not given to another and I find myself continuing the journey of who I am and where I am going; no matter the device in front of me.
What was the last song you listened to?
“On The Beach”- Neil Young
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
In any moment the taste of one may contradict the other, but I feel the next step as it arrives.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
They all sound the same.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Chris Hurst- Spotify
Anything else before we sign off?
I never know how the batteries of my light will die, but at some point they do. I don’t worry about how, when, nor why, but when the moment comes I will handle it the best that I can. Not one nor the other may shake me for who I am or take me away from this. I breathe the breath of fresh air and put my heart and soul in all that I do; no matter the time, place or medium.
