Born in Paris, France Chloe Trujillo has immersed herself in the Art/Music world from a young age. Her music is infused with anything from Rap, Metal, Gypsy & Blues. She first got her Visa through performing in NYC in Cabarets & Musical Theater. From there she was invited to LA by Gail Zappa to record the Frank Zappa cover ‘The Torture never stops’. Chloe is also Wife of Robert Trujillo of Metallica/Suicidal Tendencies.
Mark who is originally from New Zealand, made the move to Australia and started Rock outfit ‘Bellusira’ who went on to release two notable albums and move to America briefly under management from Will Hunt (Evanescence). The band toured USA a few times and had Koichi Fukuda from Static-X take over Guitar duties. Once that project came to an end, Mark decided to stay in America and continue his musical pursuit.
Both parties meet in early 2021 when asked to be a part of the Global Green Charity Event held at the Troubadour in LA.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Chloe and Mark about the latest music, surviving lock downs, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do you describe your style of music?
Mark: I was born in Hamilton, New Zealand. When I was about 17 I saved up $200 left home and moved to Australia. In 2014 I relocated again to California. The core style of this project is Rock/Hard Rock, with elements of Metal in there and a big focus on strong melodies and dynamics.
Chloe: I am originally from Paris, France. An audition brought me to NYC where I performed for a couple of years before moving to Los Angeles, where I currently reside. And as Mark said, this project is definitely Rock with an edge.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
Mark: Music was always an outlet for me as a kid. It was my escape. So that has carried me through my whole life. Ultimately I am a music fan first and have immersed myself with music, whether that’s playing in bands, writing songs, or just listening to music, it’s what I do and love.
Chloe: I grew up raised by fashion designer parents who were not only music and art aficionados, but who also dressed a lot of musicians back in the day, and my grandfather who watched me as a kid when my parent’s work schedule was crazy, he was a touring Opera singer. I started to sing, learn piano, guitar and solfeggio very young. Because I am a great mathematician, my father thought I would probably have had a better career in the scientific field, so I earn my degrees while still painting, writing and singing on the side until opportunities showed up and led me to where I am today as an artist!
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
Mark: Chloe and I both have a mutual love for heavy music, however we both enjoy various types of music as well. It doesn’t have to always be heavy! So it’s created a lot of diversity in this project, we can get a bit more experimental with sound and vibes and not feel too out of our comfort zone.
The focus is really just to write the best songs we can and get the highest emotion out of the tracks, whether that’s vocally, lyrically or musically.
Chloe: yes to what Mark said, and it’s been all about keeping it interesting and fun and moving!!
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
Mark: Not a lot changed from a creative perspective. Being that this project is just Chloe and I we wouldn’t have had the luxury of jamming out ideas with a full band anyway, so it was just a lot of files sharing and coming up with ideas on our own and putting them together.
We both write a lot and stay busy so creativity wise it just continued on like normal.
Chloe: Yes I agree with what Mark said. I haven’t really felt any challenges, the magic of nowadays technology allowed us to create sharing ideas via the Internet! And it felt pretty fluid to work with Mark like that! For the rest of my work as a solo artist and painter, these times got me even more productive than ever! Been stuck in my studio I ended up writing 2 EPs, 2 full albums, painting a lot and designing new products! It’s been busy in a great way!!
What was the last song you listened to?
Mark: A Mistake from Fiona Apple’s album When the Pawn…
Chloe: besides a new song I was working on earlier this morning, I was listening to one of my son’s songs called Flowtick from one of his band’s Feed the Beast.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
Mark: I love Vinyl; the whole presentation of that format is amazing. I also love CD’s as well. When driving around I generally just shuffle on my Apple music collection or the radio.
Chloe: I love vinyl and Cassettes! I love having a physical product that I can touch, look at the artwork, the lyrics, the info…
