Chasing Lana is a four-piece rock band from Melbourne, Australia, formed mid-2012 by singer, songwriter Dave Cutting. Chasing Lana consists of two brothers, Dave Cutting on vocals and guitar and Robbie Cutting on lead guitar, with Chris Coote on drums and Keith Harland on bass.
All band members share the same passion for music and each member has the ability to add their own creative input towards the band’s overall sound. The band was formed for one reason and that was to just play the music that they love to play.
When you see Chasing Lana play live, what you see is what you get. No fancy gimmicks or tricks, no computer-generated effects, just a pure raw sound!
In this interview spotlight, I chat with the band their album The Fight, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We are from Melbourne, Australia! We play heavy rock, similar sounding to bands like Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, Alter Bridge etc
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I grew up with music all around me from a very young age, my parents always had some kind of music on in the house, my dad was a drummer back in the day too. I think what motivates me is the love of playing and creating music. I’m very lucky to be able to make and play music and travel all around the country doing it.
There is no better feeling!
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
‘The Fight’ is our first full length album. There’s a few songs on this record that is a lot heavier sounding then our previous work. It has its slower, more Ballard-y style ‘radio’ songs as well, but over all we’ve really found our sound with this record. It’s loud, it’s aggressive and it’s full of attitude. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I’m not gonna lie, it is hard being a musician nowadays, I mean we have all these new apps now that allows people to ‘stream’ and ‘download’ all our songs, which financially doesn’t really help us musicians, but in other ways it does, it helps not only for our music to reach more people, but it also gets our name out there more. Physical CD’s are still great, nothing beats heading into your local record store and purchasing a new album and holding it in your hands! I’m still old school like that.
What was the last song you listened to?
‘My own Summer’ by Deftones. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge Deftones fan but that ‘around the fur’ record is crazy good!
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I’m more of a vinyl and cd guy. I like to have and own my music, I have physical copies of everything, it’s more personal. My music collection is pretty nuts!
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I just recently got onto Spotify. It’s good for finding new music; their all the same really. Bandcamp is a good one too, at least the artists get the majority of the funds with them. 🙂
