In this interview spotlight, I chat with Cannibal Kids about their latest release, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
We’re the band Cannibal Kids and we’re from Miami, Florida! We try not to confine ourselves to any one particular sound or style, but our next project sounds like a soft crossover of Bedroom-pop and Electropop. We make music every day and almost every time we do, it comes out pretty different.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
Music started off being just a natural instinct for us and quickly became an uncontrollable desire to learn and do more. And that goes for all of us. We’ve all been making music since we were 10-12 years old. We have all grown with it, with each other, and it’s become a huge part of our lives. We don’t see ourselves doing anything other than music. This is, without overstating, the most important thing in our lives.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
Our newest project deadheads is definitely going to be a flip for some fans of our last record Bloom. For one thing, we feel we’ve outgrown the surf-rock/indie-rock sound and are heading towards a more jazz infused-pop-centric aesthetic. The only thing we wanted from this album was to be proud of it. Sometimes it’s really hard for an artist to branch the gap of making art and actually liking what you’ve made. We felt we’ve been in that cycle for too long and wanted nothing more than to feel in love and accomplished with what we’ve made. And we think we nailed it on the head.
Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?
Absolutely. For one, we are only one of millions of amazing artists and bands trying to break out into a full time career. And everyone is super hungry and willing to do anything for the chance for progression. But at the same time, there are more opportunities and room than ever for bands to come up and find success. We would have never gotten as far as we have if not for the deconstruction of the old music industry. Everyone has a shot now with so many ways for artists like us to get their work out to people without having major backing. Our chances are higher than ever and we’re here for the long haul.
