In this interview spotlight, I chat with Brandon James about his latest single, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I’m from Chicago and my style leans more toward R&B/Soul.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
Music has been a point of joy for me and has given my life so much purpose. I feel something that special should be nurtured that’s why I work so hard and hopefully I can inspire others to do the same.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
I wanted to show off the intimacy and the passion behind my music and voice this time around and also show off live instrumentation as well as I am very passionate about a genuine band sound.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Just fighting my way to the top is the biggest challenge. There’s no set formula to this as like with a doctor or lawyer you know you need to study hard and work your butt off in order to succeed. The music game is such a gamble any opportunity could be the breakthrough one needs.
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song I listened to was “Jaded” by Disclosure. Love them!
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I guess MP3’S. My digital library keeps growing and growing.
How about this one… Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I prefer Apple Music as I have been a huge Apple fanatic since the first iPhone and it seamlessly connects to everything and I can stream my music library on any device or TV in my home.
