In this interview spotlight, I chat with musical duo Bobbylene! about their latest project, motivations, challenges and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
Bobby is from Port Washington, NY and Marlene is from Farmingdale, Maine! We currently live in New York City and originally met while studying music at NYU. We create folk-pop music.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
We have both been serious about music our entire lives! Aside from Bobbylene!, Bobby is a professional jazz saxophonist and Marlene is a professional classical pianist. While we have both always wanted to pursue singing and songwriting, it wasn’t until we started dating each other that this vision of ours became a reality. When we discovered about five months into our relationship that we each love singing, Bobbylene! was formed. What motivates us to keep making music is our love of the process and need to express ourselves in this way.
Can you tell us a little bit about this debut release of yours?
Absolutely! We released our debut EP, “Where Love Can Find Me and You” on June 20th, 2018. The EP was co-written with our friends Noel Cohen and Becca Krueger. This was the first time the two of us had written songs in this style and recorded/produced a project from start to finish. Since its release, the title track of our EP, “Where Love Can Find Me and You” has been featured on several exciting playlists including Jango Radio’s Top 100 and The Indie Folx’s “Best of Indie Folk 2018.” Prior to releasing this EP, we put out our first single, “Dancing in the Snow,” a holiday song we co-wrote with Noel Cohen. This song has gone on to be selected as one of the winners of Radio Airplay’s 2018 Holiday Song Contest!
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
Probably the biggest challenge we face is getting our music heard by a large audience since there is already so much great music out there for people to listen to. At the same time, though, having the ability to share our music online for free has given us the opportunity to put our music out there and make it accessible to the world. This is obviously something that wouldn’t have been possible prior to the streaming age.
What was the last song you listened to?
Maggie Roger’s “Light On”
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
MP3s!
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
We prefer Spotify and enjoy listening to most of our music through the platform. We love Spotify’s playlists and overall ease of user accessibility.
