Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where did you record ‘Hellucination’ and how would you describe the vibe of this album compared to your last album ‘Chrome’?
I recorded ‘Hellucination’ at my studio in Malibu, California which is also home to my company Evolver Music, Inc. I’d say this album was an obvious step forward in my genre bending of sounds that include rock and electronic. I probably took a step back in time and pulled out more guitar rock parts since I was having an itch to rock n’ roll a bit more. Overall, the album is very diverse and will please my current listeners and also capture new fans of varied tastes.
How did you get into making music and what motivates you to keep going?
Growing up I had a studio on the property of my childhood home in Toronto. Since an age earlier than I can remember I was surrounded by people producing and writing music, and it was a part of me whether I liked it or not (and believe me, I loved it). Some people fall out of hobbies at a young age like playing the piano or guitar, but the passion for it just kept growing through my teens all the way up to when I received my first record deal. After that I was just validation that the music business was my life’s purpose and has been ever since.
How are your newer releases different than previous ones on A&M etc? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific compared to your earlier works?
Since I’ve been playing music for quite a while I’m sure it’s completely different than what people heard during the major label days. Since I’m writing and playing almost daily, I probably don’t see it as much as outsiders do. I don’t have an agenda, except to make the music I’m inspired to write and I’m sure trends and artists I love have an impact on that as well.
What bands are you currently into?
I’m really digging stuff like Billie Elish, Tove Lo, Royal Blood, Fidlar and even the newer stuff from Alice In Chains.
Do you have any opinions on streaming music and where things are heading in the music industry?
I totally love it, makes everyone’s life much easier and makes the process of music discovery a piece of cake. Believe me, I miss the physical era just like anyone else and still seek out that experience through vinyls, cassettes and other mediums if I’m a superfan of something.
Do you prefer any physical mediums like CDs or Vinyl at this point?
I still prefer CD and vinyl in limited pressings. It gives someone a chance to touch/hold a piece of art if they are really into it. I have a small collection at home and seeing it and listening is an experience that is super unique.
Do you openly see any challenges being a musician in this new version of the industry where almost anyone can break through and release music? How do you stay relevant and what technology has helped you do so?
I don’t have a strong opinion on this personally but do empathize with newer artists trying to break into playlists and grabbing people’s attention. The art of networking, writing great music and working hard hasn’t changed though, and I think newer artists sometimes forget about that. The medium might be different with a more crowded space, but nothing beats getting out there and winning over fans, one by one.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more of your new music?
