In this interview spotlight, I chat with Betty Moon about motivations, challenges, her latest project and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create?
I am originally from the Toronto area and spent a good part of my early career playing music and making albums in the area. I was lucky enough that my hard work paid off in my teens and ended up with a major label deal at a time when most are cramming for exams and figuring out what to do for a career. Even since my early days, I’ve always been into a lot of different styles of music. In the 90s I continued exploring but became obsessed with the hard rock genre of music, related culture and my lifestyle apparently went along with it Yes I was in the wrong place but it was the right time and so goes my breeding ground for the many facets of rock that I got into. I guess I apply my “rock and roll” sensibilities to whatever I write, but I am opening myself up much more to different styles of music these days. I never want to stop learning and exploring as an artist. I enjoy listening to and playing many different genres and forms of sonic sounds. Even with my latest album ‘Chrome’, it seems to be difficult to pin down my genre, and I like think I tend to like it that way. I’ve also been a believer that success is in the music you are proud of and not how much you have in your bank account or how many comments you get on your socials.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
I knew I wanted to be in music since I was a little girl, and my passion hasn’t wavered since. Sometimes you got to go with your calling, and figure out creative ways to make it work. I stay motivated by trying new things and having multiple outlets to be creative while making a living, which includes consistently putting out albums and running my production company and boutique label. You really still need four to five sources of income to survive in this business anyways.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
‘Chrome’ is my 8th studio album and possibly my most commercial one. I would say the electronic/pop tracks shine the most on ‘Chrome’, but doesn’t steer too far from what my fan base would expect.. I just do the best I can with my talent and abilities and hopefully enjoy the process. There wasn’t an agenda to do anything different, and this is purely what came from almost a year of songwriting efforts and crafting a cohesive set of songs for this album.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
It’s easier and faster I think because there are so many new ways to make it so. And I love making music. I think thats become apparent and shows in my work. The gateway to entry is pretty easy also so therefore there are more artists than ever and we are saturated with everyone and they’re uncle doing music, and/or playing in a band. Technology, production and distribution/streaming advancements has made my life way easier and for many of my industry friends. That being said, standing out and building an organic following takes time and you can’t shove it in people’s faces with a grip of label money like in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Tech and social media is just a proving ground to show people what you got, and then the fans make their decision. I have been so lucky to develop a huge fanbase via Itunes, Applemusic, Facebook, Spotify and Pandora and that inspires me to continue. I have such loving, loyal and dedicated fans and I feel blessed.
Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
Well haven’t you heard? I’m everywhere! haha, well seriously though I try to keep a fairly active presence on social media sites along with my official website over at www.BettyMoon.com. If you’re lucky enough, you might even hear my music next time you’re at your favorite store, mall, club or gym since we have many songs from ‘Chrome’ placed nationwide and in various different countries round the world… round the universe actually haha. I’m being silly.
