Australian artist Aodhan – aka Aidan Whitehall – prepares to release his shimmering new single Flies In My Room out now via AntiFragile Music.
Instantly infectious, Flies In My Room combines elements of indie, dream-pop and touches of folk in order to create a sound that is undeniably vibrant and oozing with colour. Aidan’s laid-back vocal style compliments mellow musicality effortlessly, Channing the likes of Real Estate and Beach Fossils as a result. Talking about the release, Aidan explains, “over the years I’ve experimented with a few different takes on indie guitar pop as well as alternative folk music, and as my list of influences and songs I would refer back to expanded, I gradually took more and more tiny pieces of music that I love and have turned it into what it is now.'”
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Aodhan about the latest music, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
I guess having listened to a lot of alternative music growing up, as that’s a lot of what my parents taste is, would have a fair bit of influence on what I listen to and create today. A lot of what I listen to usually has that euphoric, nostalgic sound which I’m absolutely obsessed with
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
It all started when I was just about to finish primary school, at a year 6 camp, when a friend of mine asked me to sing a song with him while he played guitar. At the time I didn’t really know if I could sing or not but I just did it anyway and everyone quite liked what they heard. So I just kept going with it and eventually started writing songs of my own. I think the thing that drives me to share my music with the public is sharing my music to the public. I love creating and producing music but to me there’s no better feeling of sharing my own music with people after putting lots of time into a project.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
I’ve got quite a broad taste in music, I love most genres, but I would say that my tastes have changed in certain areas. I guess having that broad taste does influence my creativity as well as a lot of my favourite artists like Wallows, Dayglow, Josh Pyke, Spacey Jane
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
As mentioned before, I love that euphoric nostalgic sound and so I was really envisioning a lot of that being incorporated into the EP. I think I did that quite successfully on Twelve Again which is why it’s my favourite track out of all my released songs. I definitely intend on creating that sound again in the next lot of music I work on
What was the last song you listened to?
‘Lost At Sea’ by Darc Rama. A fairly new artist I think. It’s a really good song
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
Definitely vinyl. Collecting them is so fun! Plus it’s a great way to support your favourite artists
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
This is a hard one because they all offer something a little bit different. From an artists perspective I’d go with Bandcamp because it is also a great to support artists. But as a listener, Spotify. It just spoon feeds you all the music you wanna hear and gives awesome suggestions for new music
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
The biggest challenge I face is not being very good at engaging with my fans or finding new ones. I don’t know how other artists do it but I envy their abilities
Where is the best place to connect with you online? Discover more music?
I’d say my Instagram is my main platform @aodha.n
Anything else you’d like to add before signing off?
Thanks to Indie Music Discovery for a sweet Q&A, probably the best Q&A I’ve done so far. And thank you to anybody who read this far! You are cool!
