In this interview spotlight, I chat with Alex J Price about the latest music, adapting during a pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
I’m from Nashville, Tennessee and I’ve lived here all my life! Though country is the main thing in Nashville, I somehow found myself making R&B/Soul music. I love live instruments, vintage style production, and soul music so I think it’s the perfect fit for me.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
I’ve always been a big music fan. Specifically old school music. I never was into the mainstream pop, and would find myself listening to Barry White, Al Green, and stuff in that vein. I had started playing piano when I was 12 and by the time I was 14, I knew I wanted to start writing my own songs like all the artists I listened to. I’ll tell you I didn’t and still don’t know what I’m doing, but I love making music, and I just want people to hear what I’ve been creating. I’m fortunate enough to have had over a million people listen to my music, which is just mind blowing to me, and just pushes me to keep creating.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
“Love of my Life” is my newest baby, and I can say in my opinion, better than anything I’ve done prior. It’s far more soulful than my other projects which was always a goal of mine. I always knew that this sound was the direction I wanted to go in, but I never had the right tools, but now that I’ve got a little cash in my pocket, I can create all the songs I’ve been wanting to for years! With this forthcoming project I want to head back to the 1970’s and capture the soul that was found in all those songs. I’m a big fan of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and all the other legends so I was bound to create something like that at some point.
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
Just doubting myself. I consider myself a perfectionist, so it’s hard to create when I have so many ideas for a song. Whether it’s a string arrangement, a certain drum groove, a horn line, I want it to sound as good as possible. At the end of the day, I kind of just have to trust myself that what I’ve made is good, and others will enjoy it as much as I did creating it. And as for keeping a creative fire, I’ve usually maintained it since I’m in college, I’ll have all these ideas just ready for when I get to the studio to record, I never really get burnt out.
What was the last song you listened to?
It’s “Day Dreaming” by Aretha Franklin, which fun fact is my favorite song of all time. I really enjoy all of her music, but there’s something special about it that never gets old to me.
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
I absolutely love vinyl. I’ve been collecting for about 6 years now and it’s my favorite hobby. I think the best part of it is finding music that isn’t on streaming platforms which makes me feel like I’m underground and my music taste is pretty good!
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
Well, all my music is on all streaming platforms under Alex J. Price and I’m sure on some bootleg websites too ha-ha. You can also follow me on Instagram @alexjpricee and see all the things I’m up to!
