Award-winning Canadian rock band, Across The Board (ATB), releases their newest album “SONIC BOOM” – an eight track collection of infectious pop rock songs that chronicle the breaking of a rock band and the highs and lows along the journey to success. This is ATB’s second full length album, on the heels of their EP “AMENDS” and cross-Canada tour this past year. Produced and recorded in Toronto by MC2 Music Media, the album pays homage to the determination and drive it takes to achieve success as a band, and doesn’t fail to tell the truth about the rejection and indifference that can plague such a path.
Fronted by Toronto physician/musician Jacqueline Auguste, the album was written and conceptualized by Auguste during the band’s cross-Canada train tour from Toronto to Vancouver and back last summer. “I imagined what it would really take to make it in this music industry”, shares Auguste, “–not only the sheer strength and unrelenting work we need to make a mark amidst all the noise, but the importance of writing great music that resonates with our fans.”
In this interview spotlight, I catch up with Across The Board and chat about their last release, their new one and much more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
It’s great to chat with you again. How have you guys been?
Thanks for having us back! We’ve been so busy! We have been touring all over the Eastern part of Canada—primarily Ontario. We have been recording music videos for our new album, SONIC BOOM, including two high budget music videos for the first two singles “Sonic Boom” and “It Shouldn’t be This hard” as well as three “live off the floor” videos from the album as well. We have already started writing the next full length album and we have been planning on doing a cross-Canada train tour from Toronto to Vancouver and back just after Christmas. We always keep up with our usual weekly series including our “Acoustic Jam” series, “Caravan Karaoke”, “ATB LIVE” and “Pick Up & Play”—our original cover series. In addition to all of this, we started an “almost daily” Vlog last summer which is in its 169th episode on Facebook and YouTube….so its going on!
The new album is a bit of a concept in that it tells a story many of us can resonate with. How much of that story is based on truth/facts and real
life experiences?
It’s all based on truth. The story behind the rock opera is my story (Jackie) – of a small town girl wanting to bring my music to the big city—and all of the trials, tribulations and characters—good and not-so-good that I met along the way. It’s a little romantic, a lot of struggle, a smattering of fun and a great deal of hard work interspersed with sheer chaos!
What’s the one thing you want listeners to keep in my mind as they listen to Sonic Boom?
That everyone who has the courage to dream can make their dreams happen—it takes research, hard work, a creative spirit, a mind that wants to learn and understand, and a work ethic way beyond the 9 to 5, 5 day a week kind…we live, breath, eat our dream at Across The Board—and our entire family, friend base and fan base are coming along for this incredible ride. This is a lifestyle—achieving your dream—making that SONIC BOOM for all to hear. It’s not a moment in time or a snapshot. The work, the progress, the trajectory are all-encompassing. You can’t be afraid to make your dream a reality…I think that holds many of us back. We dream, but we don’t truly live the dream. We don’t truly believe that we can achieve the dream. Take the fear and apprehension out of it and just do it!
Do you have a favorite song from the new track list? Why?
I think my favorite song so far is “It Shouldn’t Be This Hard”. I was writing this song during a time when I was procrastinating doing my taxes. I hated the forms, the math, the time it took—and I just threw my hands in the air and screamed “It Shouldn’t Be This Hard!”—and the song wrote itself!
Did you face any unexpected challenges or hurdles while working on this album?
I really can’t think of any. We have the most amazing band mates, producers and management/PR folks that this album really was meant to be and unfolded right before our eyes. Sure, plans can backfire and it took a little longer to get what we wanted out of some songs more than others, but overall, it was a great experience for us and we can only pray that the next full-length album will evolved as well!
