Irish multi-instrumentalist Abbacaxi has served a long and proper musical apprenticeship. Now stepping out on his own, he has a fresh and heartfelt sound that brings positive vibrations and good times. It draws on his love of jazz, funk and disco with very modern dynamics.
With his new single and video Endless, we dive deeper into the world of Abbacaxi. The title track from his upcoming EP, due in April, is a moody mixture of hypnotic beats and euphoric tones. Bringing to mind artists like Massive Attack and Radiohead, Abbacaxi is now showing that he is here to stay with this atmospheric banger.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with Abbacaxi about the latest music, surviving the pandemic, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and how do You describe your style of music?
I am from Ireland. Some of my music could be classified as disco, or house, and some of it is trip-hop or electronica.
How did you get here? As in, what inspired or motivated you to take on this journey through music and the music biz?
I started playing drums when I was 12 and then had a lot of fun over the years learning different instruments, and playing and making music with different people. The best part about making music these days is that you can do it all at home or by yourself, and the quality won’t necessarily suffer. It’s also a very fun way to be creative.
How does your latest project compare/contrast with your previous release(s)? Were you setting out to accomplish anything specific, follow a specific theme, or explore different styles of creation?
Endless is a little bit deeper or darker than my last single. The Pageant was fun and light-hearted, but Endless has a different vibe to it. It was one of the first tracks I wrote with the Abbacaxi sound in mind, so it’s been with me the longest! My friends describe it as uplifting, but for me there are definitely a mixture of emotions in it.
I was happy to work with Des Garvey, an Irish animator, on the music video for Endless. It’s the second animated video we have made together, hopefully of many more! You can watch it here: (insert link)
Name the biggest challenge you faced as a creative during these unprecedented times? How did you adapt? How have you kept the creative fires burning during all this?
The biggest challenge I have faced as a creative is certainly in finding the balance between productivity and creativity. You need time to be creative, but it also can be very draining. It takes a lot of motivation and discipline to maintain balance in all the other aspects of your life!
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song I listened to is Starry Night by Tell. It’s a fun, vibey and funky dance track!
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? 8-tracks? Cassettes? CDs? MP3s? Streaming platforms?
I love the patience that comes with the Vinyl and CD era – people definitely listened to way more albums! However, I have come across so much new music that I might never have heard of, because of MP3s and streaming platforms.
Where is the best place to connect with you and follow your journey?
