Before I became completely absorbed by the world of Hip Hop, I used to be a serious metal head. I played bass and guitar in a nu metal band for a year or so in the early 2000s. My CD collection primarily included bands like Mudvayne, Mushroomhead, Pantera, Slayer, Korn, Alice in Chains, Sepultura, Sevendust, and a myriad of other bands that fell on the spectrum somewhere between hard rock and the various forms of metal that spawned during the 2000s.
When I was presented with A Killer Confession’s latest album, The Indifference of Good Men, I knew I was in for a sonic treat. I do not receive enough music in this genre, a genre which holds a special place in my musical heart. Considering the band members’ histories with these styles of music, I knew experience alone would deliver a listening experience I would find worthwhile, enjoyable, and ready for repeat listens.
As I have been jamming this album on my long drives back and forth to Stockton (at least) twice a week, I watched the music journalists and critics share their rave reviews for this now critically acclaimed release. With that context, there is not much I can add to the volume of material praising the masterful song crafting, excellent musicianship, pristine production, undeniable musical chemistry among the band’s members, and their pure RAWK energy.
Considering all the love from radio, blogs, magazines and other media entities, The Indifference of Good Men has no limits.
It was back in September 2016 when Waylon Reavis first announced that his new project, A Killer’s Confession, signed a deal with EMP Label Group who would release their debut album Unbroken. The album was partially recorded and mixed at Kentucky’s Third Sky Studio with Reavis, and co-producers Thom Hazaert, Richard Easterling, Jon Dale, and Matt Trumpy.
On Halloween 2016, AKC released their debut single “A Killer’s Confession“, featuring a guest performance by Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch. The band, including guitarists Matt Trumpy and Paul Elliott, and drummer Jon Dale, played their first shows in December 2016 (with Dead By Wednesday) culminating in a hometown show at the Cleveland Agora on December 17.
Fast forward to now and we have AKC‘s critically acclaimed and hard rockin’, nu metal album, The Indifference of Good Men which is supported by Wake Up! Music Group. AKC‘s current lineup includes heavy hitting talents Waylon Reavis, Morgan Bauer, JP Cross, Mark Alexander and Brock Starr.
I was fortunate enough to get a few moments out of Waylon Reavis’ busy schedule for this brief interview spotlight.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.
Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
I live in Cleveland, Ohio and I choose not to create any specific style of music. I don’t like being wrapped up in being one thing and being stuck writing the same thing over and over. I feel like a good song can be in any style.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
It’s something I’ve always had a passion for. I feel like if I’m not writing music I’m not complete. I push forward with my music because it’s what I love and is what I do there’s no real explanation of why I continue and why I push for other than the fact is what I love.
How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
The release of The Indifference of Good Men is something special to me. It has true heart and soul to it and tells a story that I’ve been waiting my entire life to tell.
The only thing I was trying to accomplish when I was writing this album Was to convey a message of a lost soul that finds hope.
Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
I have no challenges I can think of. With anything you do there are going to be ups and downs and you just have to continue forward with your head held high. Technology is a tool And you must understand how to use it. It can help you and hurt you.
What was the last song you listened to?
Waylon and Willie III: money, sex, drugs
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I prefer for anybody to listen anyway they can. I have no choice in the matter as long as they’re listening it to it.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I have a soft spot for Spotify they have always had so much love for AKC so when I direct fans to find our Music most the time I push them to Spotify.
