Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.
We are from a small town in Utah called American fork. I like to call us Aggressive Ambient Core. I’ll explain what I mean by that…We have heavier post hardcore tunes that we LOVE to dabble in loud post-rock sounding stuff.
What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?
mmmm good question! It’s kind of hard to say what led us down this path. When we first started plying as a band, I think we were all listening to heavier music. Naturally, we all kind of tried to mimic that style. As far as what motivates us, we really love writing music that strikes and pulls on people’s heart strings. I love making music that people can relate to. It’s always amazing to hear how some of our songs have brought people out of the darkness in their lives and gotten them through some heavy situations.
How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?
I’ll start out by saying that the new record we are about to release is called Existence. We just released a brand new single called The Other Side Of This ( https://youtu.be/ABZD1kyrxJE ) What makes it different than anything previous is that the entire band wrote and recorded on this record. In the past it was just Oakley Hill (drums), myself (Colton Swapp), and a couple of friends. This time around, Brad Rhoades and Tai Olsen did their thing. We also played around with trying to be more noisy and experimental. There are parts on the new record that go two to three minutes any without any vocals. We really tried to let the feeling of the songs take over when we sat down to record. We played around with an Ebow and Delay pedals all over through the entire record. When we started recording this record we set out to make something that captured existential situations. I recently lost my 6 month old nephew, and so I came into the studio carrying all of that heartache, pain, and anger I had been feeling. We set out to record something that someone could easily listen to as they were preparing or in the midst of loosing a loved one. We wanted something that translated the chaotic collateral beauty that occurs in death.
Do you face challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? How has technology helped you (assuming it helps)
Absolutely. I’ll start off by saying that there are too many ways to listen to music nowadays, in my opinion. It’s hard to really pin point and interact with your audience cause they are so spread out. Spotify Wouldnt allow artist to take control of their account unless they had 250 followers. They recently revised that, which was a huge step in the right direction. I recently looked at all the places that Cd baby sends our music and it is unbelivable. it’s like 200 plus webstites! That’s insane. Another problem with the digital age is the popular post boosting thing that seems to be taking over. Example: Facebook makes us “pay up” to really try and talk to our audience. Twitter and Instagram are trailing directly behind Facebook’s path of “Pay to play.” These are people that took time to “Like” your page, knowing that they’ll see updates from your business account. If you don’t boost the post enough, No one will see what you’re doing or trying to say. It really sucks and I don’t wanna accept that this is how it’s going to be. We can do better, ya know? businesses should be able to reach their followers naturally. Let’s talk about how much I LOVE Spotify tho. I personally use Spotify and I love how easy it is to find cool bands and artists. Discovering new music has never been easier!…But I think I use Spotify a little different than most users do…If I find a band or a specific record on Spotify I really enjoy, I will pay it forward and go buy the record to put on my iPod out of respect for the artist. I think if everyone would actually buy records again, things might improve for struggling artists trying to make art.
